Cultural humility is an ongoing process of self-reflection, openness, and a commitment to learning from individuals with diverse backgrounds. Unlike cultural competency, which focuses on acquiring knowledge about different cultures, cultural humility emphasizes continuous personal growth, recognizing biases, and developing meaningful relationships. In healthcare, this mindset is essential, as trust, communication, and understanding directly impact patient outcomes.
At Salud Para La Gente, I see firsthand how socioeconomic barriers shape healthcare access. Many patients lack the financial means to access nutritious food, and some struggled with literacy, making health education even more challenging. Assisting an oral health coach, I learn that providing care isn’t just about treatment—it’s about meeting patients where they are and addressing their unique challenges.
At Dientes Community Dental Care, I observe how many patients, primarily Medicaid recipients, face language barriers that make it difficult to understand their treatment options. Dentists having to adjust their communication styles, relying on interpreters or simplified explanations to ensure patients feel informed and comfortable. This reinforces that trust and education are just as important as clinical expertise. These experiences have been strengthening my belief that dentistry requires not just technical skill but also the ability to connect with patients in ways that acknowledge their realities.
Studying at UC Santa Cruz and abroad in London broadened my perspective, exposing me to diverse cultures and healthcare approaches. Coursework in Cultural Competency and Intercultural Awareness deepened my understanding of how background shapes patient experiences.
As I prepare for dental school, I see cultural humility as a guiding principle. Dentistry is more than technical skill—it’s about fostering trust, educating patients, and addressing barriers to care with empathy and understanding. My goal is to create an inclusive practice where all patients feel heard, respected, and empowered in their healthcare journey.
