NEURO-SOCIOLINGUISTICS: This project combines variationist sociolinguistics and psycho- and neurolinguistic methods, with the aim of providing a better understanding of the neurophysiological underpinnings of grammatical variability and language change.
Self-reported participial agreement by age and municipality in the Sunnmøre region (n = 424).
DIALECT LEVELLING: Focusing on declining participial number agreement in Sunnmøre Norwegian dialects in North-Western Norway, this project employs a combination of ERP sentence processing, speech production, and grammaticality judgment tasks to probe:
how exposure to linguistic variation influences individual and group differences in behavioral and processing outcomes
how intra- and inter-speaker variation in the production of variable grammatical features relates to corresponding behavioral and neurophysiological responses during comprehension
what individual differences measured in on-line and off-line measures reveal about the mechanisms through which language change progresses
VARIABLE GRAMMATICAL PROCESSING: Individual ERPs are shown to be highly sensitive to intra- and inter-individual variation (rate of participial agreement in speech) as well as a wide range of individual sociodemographic factors (e.g., age, Bokmål/Nynorsk exposure, etc.).
By integrating methodologies from sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and psycholinguistics, this work provides more nuanced and detailed empirical data on the complex dynamics of language change and the role that individual variability plays in this process.
INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCE MEASURES: GAM-based individual ERP measures of two Sunnmøre dialect speakers' participial non-agreement minus agreement waveforms, illustrating contrasting brain responses at early and late stages of language change.
