The EU MSCA, IMT Atlantique, and the University of Sherbrooke jointly co-funded the TinyPA project. The project aims to study and develop an edge-TinyML-based plant disease detection sensor device for real-time monitoring in farms. It is Ph.D. funded programme, where the student will be hosted at IMT Atlantique for 2 years and the University of Sherbrooke for 1 year, resulting in a double degree for the Ph.D. candidate. The Ph.D. candidate will be mainly supervised by Prof. Baghdadi, Dr. Asiedu from IMT Atlantique, and Prof. Roy and Dr. Boateng from the University of Sherbrooke. Additionally, the student will gain mentorship from Prof. Saoudi, Prof. Benjillali, Prof. Yun, Dr. Bennin, and Dr. Gookyi. This page serves as the central point for information, links, and updates on the research progress and deliverables, which are openly accessible.

Project Scope: By tapping into next-generation wireless communication technologies such as (i) backscatter communication technology, which is highly energy-efficient, (ii) radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting technology for ambient signal energy harvesting as an alternative power supply, and (iii) the efficient design of RF signal receivers (antennas), the computation and predictive capabilities for PDD can be moved onto the farm (i.e., edge computation). Edge computation can be achieved by implementing the Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) PDD algorithm on a processor-equipped sensor at the farm site. Therefore, this doctoral research proposal presents a novel solution through energy-efficient Edge-TinyML sensor implementation that integrates (i) backscatter wireless information and power transfer (i.e., sensor powered by energy scavenged from radio frequency signals) (WIPT) technology, (ii) efficient WIPT antenna design, and (iii) a low-cost, efficient processor for TinyML applications.
