Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Rocks

Mass Wasting, Weathering/Erosion, and Deserts

-=---------=- The Rock Cycle -=---------=-

Using Latin and root words can help the students remember how the rock types are made. Ignis is fire in latin, sedimentum literally means 'to settle,' and meta-morphe means "a change in form." A worksheet or activity that covers these root words would be beneficial for this topic and others.

One idea in the works is to use something like Minecraft to get the students interested in the theory behind different types of rocks. Asking questions like, what happens to lave when it is cooled quickly in Minecraft will lead to a better understanding of how obsidian is former in real life. The comparison doesn't have to be Minecraft.

Here is a worksheet with different Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Rocks. Update this to include a section where the students should sort the different rocks into their respective categories.

This lesson plan has links to purchase different rock resources. This would be very beneficial to allow students the opportunity for hands on learning. Being able to physically feel and observe the different rocks made identifying them easier for me.

=---------= Mass Wasting =---------=

Here is a presentation that covers mass wasting. I need to incorporate some of the elements in this one into a newer own, with less text per page.

Alongside the lecture is a short worksheet that has the students classify the different types of mass movements, as well as list some of the potential dangers.

Here is another lecture presentation on mass wasting. I will need to come back and splice the best parts of these presentations into one presentation. This one has slightly clearer concepts and imagery for how the ground actually moves in different mass movements.

Desert-Crossword.pdf

Here is an introductory video about deserts. It covers some of the basics.

Here is a cool project idea. Pairing this with a separate page that lists key desert features would be a good activity.
