How to help Jack's work
Following a collapse of confidence in the governance of Calcutta Rescue in 2025, its Indian management team moved en-masse to another Indian charity, DSS Kolkata (Divine Script Society).

The Calcutta Rescue in India is therefore no longer connected to the UK or to other overseas offices in Europe or North America.

"In late 2025, a team of highly experienced managers, who had all worked together at Calcutta Rescue, brought their skills to DSS Kolkata with the blessings of the founder of Calcutta Rescue, Dr. Jack Preger, who is widely regarded as the founder of street medicine globally.
Under the leadership of Calcutta Rescue's former CEO, Jaydeep Chakraborty, this charity is continuing Dr Jack's vital work with the poor in Kolkata in accordance with his values and principles. CEO Jaydeep Chakraborty and his team have brought a wealth of skills and many decades of experience of delivering high-quality services into DSS Kolkata. The DSS Kolkata team are deeply committed to Dr. Jack Preger's compassionate approach to serving the poorest of the poor and to his values and high ethical standards.
The DSS Kolkata approach is based on gaining a detailed understanding of what each slum community needs and then providing tailored interventions to meet those needs.
Based in the docklands, one of the city's most deprived areas, DSS Kolkata is rapidly expanding its services to provide healthcare, education, improving living standards, and helping people into employment.
By providing this holistic range of support in the slums where they work, and by working collaboratively with other agencies and the Government, DSS Kolkata aims to help individuals, families and whole communities lift themselves out of poverty.
Divine Script Society (DSS Kolkata) was set up by social worker Mahua Sur Ray (now the chair of Kolkata's child welfare committee) in 2011 to provide support for vulnerable women and their children in the red light district in Khidderpore, Kolkata."
