An Eagle Scout Service Project is a demonstration of leadership from a Scout, where they develop, plan and execute a project to benefit their community. This is the culmination of a Scout's leadership journey.
My Eagle Scout Project is a musical instrument donation drive for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) to give back and support the community that has taught me so much over the years.
My Eagle Scout Project has three components: Sustainability, Education and Support.Â
The sustainability component is a musical instrument donation drive from the community to be redistributed to students who need them. The donated instruments will be cleaned and evaluated by the county before going back into our school systems to give more students the opportunity to learn music.
The education component is this website with the musical instrument videos to help promote a greater understanding of the workings of musical instruments and the benefits of a local community music program. It will also include multiple presentations at community school events about my project and its components, a brief history of music in scouting, and why music is important to a kids education.
The support component helps my local music community with the donation, cleaning and maintenance of the collected instruments during the drive, and supporting the local schools by tuning and assisting at the spring of 2026 concerts.
There has been a long history of music in tandem with Scouting, particularly dating back to the first official book of Scout Songs and Yells, published in 1921. Music has been a way to bring Scouts together, whether it has been through boosting morale and team spirit, bringing Scout patrols and troops together with identifying songs, or just adding to the fun of the Scouting environment. Even today, a requirement for your first rank in Scouting is to make a patrol cheer to demonstrate pride and unity.
Furthermore, Scouting has a variety of merit badges, including the Music Merit Badge. Merit Badges are a way for Scouts to explore new career possibilities, step outside their comfort zones, and foster personal growth. The Music Merit Badge teaches a Scout how to read and play music, explore the types of instruments, attend a live performance, interview musicians, and explore musical careers. (Music Merit Badge)
As both a Scout and a student, music has been immensely influential in my life, and I am so excited to give back to my community with my Eagle Scout Project.
