My name is Jack Mewett, I am a junior at Crofton High School, and I have been in AACPS school orchestras since 4th grade. I started on a 1/2 size cello 8 years ago, and I now play a 4/4 size cello as the principal Cellist of the Crofton High School Orchestra. I also play in the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra, and take private music lessons. Previously, I was the 3rd chair cellist of the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra. My experience over the years have shown me the importance of having an instrument that fits the person, and I have seen firsthand that not everyone has the ability to play in the orchestra as a result of financial concerns or instrument availability. This has inspired me to do this musical instrument donation drive and focus my project on sustainability, education and support, and share my love of music with my community.
I am a Life Scout in my local BSA Troop, and have had the honor of being Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Librarian, Scribe, and a Patrol Leader. Scouting is so important to me because I see how it teaches young people the essential skills to be productive members of society. I have learned so much about leadership and collaboration, hard work and determination, and a lot of useful skills. The coolest thing I have done as a scout was go on the Philmont High Adventure experience, a 12 day backpacking trip in the backcountry of New Mexico. The rank of Eagle Scout is important as it signifies the pinnacle of a scouts experience and their journey, and is tangible proof of their effort and willpower.
