J Saia’s Custom Woodwork specializes in the fusion of native woods from Louisiana and exotic species from around the world, into timeless pieces to be cherished for generations. Each piece is hand crafted on the banks of the Mississippi River in Brusly, La. There is a deep appreciation for Louisiana, from the art, the people, the food, and the craftsmen. Louisiana is home to unique trees and growing conditions that produce incredibly beautiful lumber. We incorporate them, with the often outrageous species that can be found in Africa, South America, and Asia. Culminating into a piece that truly represents our Louisiana Culture, and the families that will enjoy it.

Lumber choice is paramount in the process. Long before the first cut is made, lumber is chosen specifically for each piece. The grain patterns, the colors, all of the little details and imperfections in the wood are carefully appreciated. Each board is hand selected for its quality and beauty. By starting with the wood first, we allow its beauty to be the focus of the design instead of relying on the design alone.

Lumber choice is not the only thing obsessed over. The balance of showcasing nature without sacrificing function is a source of pride in our work. Every cut, every joint, every detail is painstakingly developed. The hardware is hand- picked for subtlety, function, and to accentuate the piece. The joints are often chosen to allow the wood grain to flow through the piece. The wood is allowed to be prominent with little distraction from its natural elegance, while still serving its purpose.

“One-of-a-kind” goes far beyond wood choice and joints. “Custom” woodwork is in the name for a reason, requests for unique designs or features are a necessary part of the process. The design of each piece involves the input of the people that will enjoy it. In doing so, there is a connection made long before the piece is complete. Pictures of the process are shared constantly and sudden changes and ideas are encouraged. Each and every step is managed by the people that will enjoy it.
