2026 Wanders Coming Soon!
Let’s be honest: preparing for your first bikepacking trip can feel a little intimidating. What do you pack? How do you not overpack? And how on earth do you make it all fit?
Good news—you don’t need fancy gear or expert status to have an amazing experience. At J.P. Wanderwheels, we believe in keeping things simple, practical, and human. So here’s your first-time gear guide that balances comfort and adventure without overcomplication.
The Essentials (aka: What You Actually Need)
Toiletries & Meds Keep it light. A travel toothbrush, toothpaste, a few ounces of body wash, and some ibuprofen will go a long way. Toss in a couple of band-aids and antiseptic wipes for peace of mind.
PJs (or Not) No pressure to bring a full sleepwear set. Some riders just rock underwear and a T-shirt. On cooler nights, a lightweight base layer (like the 32° gear) works great. Or sleep in your camp clothes—we’re not judging.
Camp Clothes / Street Clothes One weather-appropriate outfit is enough for a couple of days. A clean pair of wool socks always feels like a treat.
Riding Clothes One or two pairs of padded shorts (let ‘em air out overnight), two tops, and socks. Add a vest or rain jacket if the weather looks iffy. That’s it..
Sleeping Setup
Sleep Bag: A lightweight bag or summer quilt is perfect.
Sleep Pad: Inflatable or foldable—your choice.
Tent: A 1-2 person backpacking tent is ideal. Inexpensive or used is totally fine. Adventurous? Try a hammock or tarp shelter.
Hydration Bring 2-3 water bottles and/or a CamelBak. But don't worry, we'll keep you topped off with water
Snacks We’ll have snacks, but if you’ve got some treats you love, pack ‘em. Chocolate counts.
Final Thoughts You don’t need to be a hardcore minimalist or a gear junkie to ride with us. Just bring your sense of adventure (and maybe some lip balm), and we’ll take care of the rest.
