Fairfax County Public Schools Japanese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs begin in first grade. The DLI classroom delivers educational content in English and Japanese. Students spend half the day learning in Japanese (math, science, health, language arts) and the other half in English (Language arts and social studies). FCPS provides a middle school immersion transition program at feeder middle schools for students who successfully complete the FCPS elementary language immersion program. Students successfully completing the 7th grade Immersion 1 course earn a high school credit and the same is true for the 8th grade Immersion 2 course. The immersion students enter high school in Level 3 of the target language in 9th grade.
Fairfax County Residency is the only requirement for eligibility. Parents of students who reside outside the dual language immersion school’s attendance area must provide their own transportation. (FCPS, 2021)
