Nintendo Headquarters in Kyoto
Nintendo (にんてんどう) is a multinational video game company headquartered in Kyoto. Founded in 1889, the company originally made hanafuda (はなふだ) playing cards, or flower cards, before it started developing video games in the 1970s.
In 1981, it developed and began distributing a coin-operated video game Donkey Kong, one of the first games that allowed characters to jump. The hero, Jumpman, is a carpenter racing to save his girlfriend, Pauline, from a crazed ape. Jumpman was later renamed Mario (マリオ) because he resembled the landlord of Nintendo’s US headquarters, Mario Segali.
Nintendo’s Family Computer or Famicom (ファミコン) was released in 1983. It sold over 2.5 million units in Japan during its first year. The game console was sold as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the US in 1985. Famicom or NES featured groundbreaking games like Super Mario Bros. (スーパーマリオブラザーズ) and The Legend of Zelda (ゼルダのでんせつ).
Nintendo has developed some of the best-selling video game franchises that are played by people all over the world.
Mario (マリオ), Nintendo's official mascot, was created by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. The Mario franchise has expanded into other game genres, including racing, sports, party, puzzle, and role-playing games. Selling over 200 million copies, it is currently the best-selling video game franchise of all time.
Pokemon (ポケモン) was created by Satoshi Tajiri, founder, and president of Game Freak, in 1996 as a role-playing video game for the Nintendo Game Boy handheld game console. The franchise includes an anime series, manga, trading card games, toys, merchandise books, films, and other media. Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures own The Pokemon Company. Animal Crossing or Dobutsu no Mori (どうぶつのもり) was released in 2001. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, sold more digital units in its first month than any other game in history.

The origin of Shogi (しょうぎ) is the competition called "Chaturanga" (チャトランガ) which started in India and became "Chess" in the West. It came to Japan via China in the Nara to Heian periods. The oldest Shogi pieces were unearthed from the Kofuku-Ji temple in Nara. Today's style of Shogi was established at the end of the Muromachi era. Shogi means general's (shou しょう) board game (gi ぎ). There are eight types of pieces こま: one King (王将・おうしょう), two Gold Generals(金将・きんしょう), two Silver Generals (銀将・ぎんしょう), two knights, two Lances, one Rook, one Bishop, and nine Pawns. Shogi is played on a 9x9 board.
The game of Go (ご) came to Japan from China and became popular during the Nara and Heian periods. Its original name is Igo (いご). Go uses black and white stones, or Go-ishi (ごいし). The subject of the game is to dominate the territory. At the Shosoin Repository (しょうそういん), the treasure house of Todai-ji temple in Nara, three Goban boards and two sets of Go stones are preserved in the relics of Emperor Shomu (しょうむてんのう, 701-756). Go also appears in literature in the Heian period, such as "The Tale of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu, and "The Pillow Book" by Sei Shonagon. The anime Hikaru no Go (ヒカルのご) also helped to popularize the game in modern times.
Iroha Karuta (いろはかるた) set comes with cards with letters or Yomi-Fuda (よみふだ) and cards with pictures or Tori-Fuda(とりふだ). On Yomif-Fuda, a proverb or short sentence is written, and Tori-Fuda has the first letter of the proverb and a picture matching the Yomi-Fuda. Iroha Karuta is a kind of educational material for children to learn Hiragana or Katakana.
Hyakunin-isshu (百人一首・ひゃくにんいっしゅ) is a collection of 100 Tanka (たんか) poems or by 100 poets compiled by Fujiwara no Teika (ふじわらのていか) in the Heian period. Hyakunin-isshu karuta uses those 100 tanka. Each Yomi-Fuda has a tanka and picture of the poet. Tanka is composed of five lines of 5,7,5,7,7 syllables. The first three lines are "Kaminoku" (かみのく), and the last two lines are "Shimonoku" (しものく). Tori-Fuda card has only Shimonoku in Hiragana, and players must match cards as quickly as possible.
Competitive Karuta(きょうぎかるた) became popular thanks to a big hit manga/anime called Chihayafuru (ちはやふる) by Yuki Suetsugu. It's about a high school girl who grows through competitive Karuta.
