Jason Gonzalez, known as J. Gonzo, is a Chicano artist and designer from Cypress, California and is now based in Phoenix, Arizona. He is also an Illustrator and comic author of La Mano del Destino. He also contributed art to La Voz de MAYO: Tata Rambo for Top Cow & Image Comics. His style is illustrative, focusing on creating Latino stories, with notable works like La Mano del Destino and La Voz de MAYO: Tata Rambo. His creative journey began in Catholic school, where religious iconography and structured aesthetics left a lasting impression on him. Raised in a Latino household, J. Gonzo absorbed the vibrant colors, patterns and storytelling traditions of his grandparents’ generation. At the same time, he was drawn to the punk rock scene in the late 1970s of Orange County, a rebellious subculture rich in DIY ethos and visual defiance. This dual exposure to sacred imagery and countercultural energy formed the foundation of his unique aesthetic. After earning a graphic design degree from a trade school, J. Gonzo began his professional journey as a tattoo artist, where he deepened his understanding of symbolic storytelling.
