This was the first time throughout all of my different placements that I was in a class where they did some life skills activities. I am not going to lie, this goal was fun!. Every day I supported the students in the classroom whenever they had to complete Life Skills Bins. From sorting band-aids to take them to each classroom in the school, to pairing socks and sorting cutlery. Some other days I supported them when we had activities like cooking, doing laundry, shredding paper, and by going shopping to the convenience store.
When I had this goal in mind, I knew I wanted to create deeper connections with the students, something I felt I was missing from my last two placements because I never got to spend enough time with any student to build a good relationship with them.
I advocated for myself and I had the opportunity to do my 3rd placement in the STC (structured teaching classroom) and although I know this goal might be hard to prove, I am a 100% sure I succeed.
The STC teacher and EAs were so welcoming and helpful, and each week I felt like I fitted right in there. The students took me in and were happy to see me every week, and I was happy to see them too. My days in that classroom were awesome and my last day was bittersweet. I am grateful for the trust, support, knowledge and love the staff and kids showed me throughout my 10 weeks of placement.
When I decided to enroll in a post-secondary program I was so excited, but nervous at the same time. I did not know what to expect from the program and I was also concerned about my abilities to complete a full-time program in a different language and in a different county for the first time.
To be honest, the first couple of days I felt out of place because unlike a lot of my classmates, I did not have a first-hand experience with someone with a disability, I was just pursuing a new career, and I was excited to learn something new.
The first term felt easy, I was just adjusting to using SLATE and doing online courses, but it was not until the second term where we had to attend placement for the first time that I felt challenged. The challenge was not only to fulfil the expectations as a student, but also to start working in the field.
Being a full-time student and going to placement was very hard, but it made me realize I have good working qualities like organizing my time. Now that I look back at it, I feel so happy to say that I was able to always hand in my assignments on time, I was able to complete quizzes and tests within the time frame that was provided, and I was always able to take care of myself and my well-being. Although it was stressful at times, my time management skills played a huge part in my time at Sheridan and I am confident to say that whenever I face any challenges I can always count on myself to problem-solve.
The experiences I had at my placements and the things I learned from this program have been detrimental in my development as a better person. I think I was able to understand a lot of things about myself, and about the people that surround me.
I believe this program has turned me into a more empathetic and patient person, but it also reinforced other positive qualities I already had in myself.
Although there is still a lot to learn from, I feel so happy to complete this program, and I am grateful for the people I met, the friends I made, the teachers I learned from, and the experiences that I had.
