Why? Your body needs carbohydrates! Carbohydrates are a natural source of energy that the body needs to function. They are not "BAD" for you. Generally, the body needs at least 130 grams of carbohydrates each day to maintain healthy brain function. Diets that completely eliminate carbohydrates, "ketogenic diets", pose a serious health risk by limiting the brain's access to the energy it needs. This can lead to fatigue, coma, and even death. Ketogenic diets should be reserved for only a select few individuals being followed by an experience licensed healthcare professional.
*NOTE* Beware of hidden carbohydrates or "added sugars" in the food you eat. Check the nutrition label to help catch those hidden sugars.
How Much? Depending on activity level, the body will require different amounts of carbohydrates and this might change for the same individual several times a year. Visit the Food Guide link to find out more!
