Exhibit 2

Girl on the Salt Flats

Background

During the summer of 2020 when we were starting to get stir-crazy from all the restrictions with Covid-19, we drove out as a family to see the Salt Flats in Utah's west desert. No one brought sunglasses and we were terribly surprised at how bright everything was. It seems that lots of other folks had the same idea as us. Unfortunately, that made for photo ops that had strangers in the background.

Design

Contrast

The before image already had a pretty good use of contrast in the colors: blue sky, pink sweater, dark pants. I didn't adjust the contrast other than increasing the brightness.

Repetition

I liked this image for the reflection it had of my daughter. I cropped the image so there wasn't as much muddied water in the foreground, but there is still that element of repetition in the reflection that shows up to her knees.

Alignment

While there isn't an text in this image, I placed her more appropriately in the right third of the image (scale of thirds).

Photoshop Skill(s) Used

I removed the additional people in the background of the before image, including my son standing to the right of my daughter. I brightened the image a bit so her face wasn't in as much shadow, and cropped the image so she wasn't standing just off-center.

revision

  • The image quality was improved a bit using Topaz Gigapixel. I brightened the image and adjusted the white balance as well.
