We know you might giggle when you hear the name Bangkok, but it’s actually not pronounced the way you think! 😆 It’s called Ba(r)ng-Gock, and the Thai people don’t actually refer to it as that either. So, what do we call the city? The official name is Krung Thep Mahanakorn, which appears on all government documents, but locals simply shorten it to Krung Thep. Bangkok is an old name that has been used for centuries, and during the reign of King Rama I, the first king of the Bangkok period, he decided to change it. As a result, it became the longest city name in the world: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit. This lengthy name was chosen to reflect the grandeur of Thailand's capital city.
