DEFINITION
Second language acquisition (SLA) or second language learning general refers to the process through which an individual acquires the second language.
According to Mitchell, a second language can be described as a second language that is widely used for interpersonal communication and is often a medium for educational, governmental, or commercial purposes. What this means is that any language that is learned after learning one’s mother tongue may be referred to as the second language. Second language, or second language acquisition, also referred to as sequential learning, is the process whereby an individual learns more than one language with the first language already in place. According to Field, there are far more multilingual people in global society than monolingual individuals. Multilingualism is the process of using more than one language or the presence of two or more languages in the communicative practices in which one or more individuals are involved.

Second language acquisition is one of the primary subfields of applied linguistics, which is already familiar to the academic community through research and practice in other departments such as linguistics, psychology, and sociology. In some way, it is quite a new field of study, so it will be interesting. Many works on SLA have been conducted in academic contexts across the different institutions. During the development of SLA during the 1950s and 1960s, the area of SLA did not start as a distinct area of research with its origins but as an extension of the existing theories of language teaching.

INTEGRATIVE MOTIVATION
This is a common procedure that involves presenting the rules of a particular grammar item and then going for examples, including the grammar item in a text. The final practice is carried out by using the item, and then, following the use of the item, you will write sentences in the target language and translate the target language into the mother tongue. Parts of the grammar translation method are found in textbooks with vocabulary lists, and we are surrounded by grammar rules in classical literature. The use of grammar in teaching us a tool and practice is an exercise based on the taught framework of rules.

There are various types of motivation, namely intrinsic, extrinsic, integrative, and instrumental motivation, and their implications for language instruction and learner success. Understanding the dynamics of these motivational factors can provide valuable insights for educators to design effective instructional strategies

Integrative motivation is the second type of language learning motivation. As described by Gardner and Lambert, integratively motivated learners are those who desire to learn the language in order to become more familiar with the people who speak it. They are fond of the culture of that specific language. Integratively motivated learners may include significant others or family members who speak the language, and heritage language learners are a specific group of learners with particularly strong integrative motivation to learn the language.

Based on the video provided, we can see that Felix, a member of Straykids, a K-pop boyband, is reading and memorising Korean vocabulary. He also looks stressed while memorising the vocabulary, and there is also a clip of him crying in the corner of the training room due to language learning fatigue. So, does this relate to the main topic of second language acquisition? Yes. To begin with, he is not Korean; thus, it is his second language, also known as a foreign language, and the Korean language was not generally spoken in his surroundings back then. We can also observe that he experiences an acquisition barrier. More specifically, it is because of the age factor. After puberty, it becomes quite challenging for someone who intends to acquire a second language because the critical period for someone to acquire a language is in the infant phase, as it is a period where the human brain is most ready to receive input. On top of that, the optimum age for learning a language may be between 10 and 16 years old. Not to forget, Felix is experiencing two concepts from second language acquisition, which are grammar translation methods and integrative motivation. As we can see, Felix is learning and memorising Korean vocabulary from a textbook or sets of grammar rules and vocabulary lists. This shows that he uses this method to consciously fathom the rules of the Korean language and is able to memorise those language-long lists. Nevertheless, this method can't really help him acquire the Korean language in a short period of time because he probably reads the context of translation over and over and does not focus on communication. Moreover, we can observe that he is pushing himself to learn the language over time. This shows that he is learning under pressure and has a desire to acquire the language thoroughly. Hence, he has an integrative motivation where he is eager to learn the Korean language for social purposes, which is to be an kpop artist and entertain the future fans in Korean society who are not able to understand his first language. Thus, this motivation is really crucial, as it drives him on his language learning journey.

His parents are both Korean immigrants who moved and worked in Australia. Thus, his nationality is Australian, and his ethnicity is Korean. During his childhood, he attended school there, which contributed to his fluency in the English language the most. In addition, being exposed to an English-speaking environment and practicing it with his surroundings helped to improve his proficiency in the language. As he grew older, he intended to be an artist in Korea, so he attended the audition to be a trainee at JYP Entertainment. As soon as he was selected to be a member of the boyband, his journey into learning the Korean language began.

He was completely in a position where he didn't know how to interact with people around him, and that made him tend to focus more on the Korean language. Additionally, daily activities that required communication helped him a lot. For instance, he would use the Korean language precisely when ordering food to make sure there was an effective interaction. He also stated that listening to music is important, as he could repeat the lyrics constantly and digest them.

Personally, I think Felix did a very good job in his second language learning because he is now able to use the Korean language in his daily life. Despite the hardships of acquisition barriers, he has overcome those challenges by struggling and genuinely learning them to achieve his dream career. From a communicative competence perspective, I believe that he has obtained grammatical, sociolinguistic, and strategic competence as he has been an artist in Korea for about 7 years. This means his ability to use the language with his friends, fans, and management has developed over the period.
Personally, I think Felix did a very good job in his second language learning because he is now able to use the Korean language in his daily life. Despite the hardships of acquisition barriers, he has overcome those challenges by struggling and genuinely learning them to achieve his dream career. Besides that, Felix's journey proves that acquiring a language needs to go through numerous processes, as he had experienced years of learning the language and practiced it consistently.
