Second language acquisition (SLA) or second language learning general refers to the process through which an individual acquires the second language.
Textbooks generally attempt to codify the grammar of the target language into discrete rules for students to learn and memorize. In a typical grammar-translation textbook, a chapter would begin with a bilingual vocabulary list.
Grammar is the main tool of this language learning method. Grammatical analysis of sentence structure, including morphology and syntax, is taught to students and asked to be practiced over and over.
Integrative motivation is the second type of language learning motivation. As described by Gardner and Lambert, integratively motivated learners are those who desire to learn the language in order to become more familiar with the people who speak it. They are fond of the culture of that specific language. Integratively motivated learners may include significant others or family members who speak the language, and heritage language learners are a specific group of learners with particularly strong integrative motivation to learn the language.
