Digital computers were originally programmed in machine code by human programmers. Computers still need machine code, but they now have assemblers, compilers and interpreters to help humans program them.

An example of machine code to the right, though binary is only ones and zeros, the alphanumeric characters represent the physical memory locations on a particular computer.

Assembly language is a low level language as well--it is higher than machine language, but it is still hard for humans to understand and the assembler is particular to the computer hardware it is applied to. For example the script to the right is specific to a Motorola MC6800 microprocessor.

A-0 was the first compiler developed by Grace Hopper in 1951. It was used for the UNIVAC in 1952.

High level programming languages require a compiler or an interpreter to convert the English like code into machine code for the computer to perform the program.
An example of high level programming languages are Python, C++ and Java to name a few.
