Asset Management

In ITIL (especially in ITIL v3 and ITIL 4), it’s defined under the Service Asset and Configuration Management (SACM) practice — a key part of Service Transition and Service Configuration Management.

ITIL Asset Management Overview

Purpose:
To ensure that assets (hardware, software, licenses, documentation, people, facilities, etc.) required to deliver services are properly controlled, maintained, and recorded — supporting both financial accountability and service reliability.

Goal:
Provide accurate information about assets and their relationships, enabling better decision-making, risk management, and lifecycle planning.

1. Asset Identification

• Identify and label all assets within scope (hardware, software, network components, etc.).

• Record key details (ownership, version, location, serial number, etc.).

2. Asset Control

• Ensure assets are tracked throughout their lifecycle (procurement → deployment → maintenance → disposal).

• Control changes through Change Management.

3. Status Accounting

• Record current and historical data for each asset.

• Track configuration versions, warranty status, and contract details.

• Maintain accurate inventory for audits and compliance.
  
  

4. Verification and Audit

• Regularly audit assets to confirm records match the physical or virtual items.

• Identify unauthorized or missing assets.

• Support cybersecurity and compliance frameworks.

5. Lifecycle Management

• Manage asset lifespans — from acquisition and deployment to retirement or disposal.

• Coordinate with Procurement, Finance, and Change Management.

• Ensure value optimization and risk reduction over time.
