Project #1
Marly Hildebrand
The idea behind this project is how sculptural art creates key concepts on how other art is formed. In this project the topic of sculptural art versus other art forms will discuss the similarities and differences. Sculptures are the key art form that in a sense, is what we are all made of. For this project, I have also made a sculpture myself and I will dive into why my sculpture is a perfect representation of this dilemma.
When thinking of sculptural art, what comes to mind? Is it the ancient Greek statues or buildings that have been made, or is it more complex like Donald Judd’s sculptures? Looking at sculptures versus things like paintings, sculptures are a tangible art form whereas paintings are more optical. You can not only see the indentations in a sculpture but you can feel them. Artists often use this tool to provide detail within their artwork. You can also view the sculpture from multiple angles, which gives you a different perspective on what was the idea in the artist’s eyes. In paintings and other two dimensional art forms, there is only one perspective to look at and that is facing the art itself.
Another concept that was pondered on was the fact that sculptural art embodies life. Everything is made of different materials. We are all made of matter. Our bodies are built and put together in a sense like a sculpture. You take those materials and it makes up a person. You go to the gym and prepare your food–you are sculpting it. You get tattoos–you are putting art on the sculpture.
For the example that I made, I created a skull turning into a sea monster. This shows that sculpting can not only create a variety of things, but transform the same way we humans do. Like we manipulate the things we do to sculpt our bodies the way we like, we manipulate the tools we use to get the desired product in sculpting.
I believe all of these ideas can correlate as to how sculpting is different from other art forms, as well as sculpting is what makes up the things in the world both literally and figuratively.
