A video lesson is either draft (=unpublished) or published. While you're working on your lesson,,leave it as draft. When you're done, you can publish it and share it with the world.
When you switch it from "Draft" to "Published", you will be taken to the unique page of the lesson, and you can play it to see what your students will see.
1. You need to type in the full sentence.
2. Then click somewhere else in the question box.
3. Then you can click on the words that you want to omit. You can select multiple words to omit, but only if they are right next to each other.
4. You can add an explanation if you want.
Example:
We have never tasted such a delicious sweet potato pie.
POSSIBLE:
We ........... never tasted such a delicious sweet potato pie.
ALSO POSSIBLE:
We ........... such a delicious sweet potato pie.
NOT POSSIBLE:
We ........... never ........... such a delicious sweet potato pie.
You need to type in the question, the answer options (at least two) and mark one or more correct answers.
Multiple right answers are possible. The student is only given a point when he/she marks all right answers.
You can add an explanation if you want. It's not compulsory,
Your student needs to order the mixed words to recreate your original sentence.
1. Type in the full sentence.
2. Click anywhere else (outside the type field).
3. You will see your sentence turned into a string of blocks. That means that the system will automatically mix the words in your sentence. You're done.
4. You can add an explanation if you want. Explaining either the right answer, or the right and the wrong answers.
Maybe your chosen video is too long, e.g. it's 20 minutes, but you only have 10. You can click the scissors icon, and it will cut out a random part of the video where you are. You can then set the beginning and the end to your skipped part.
You can skip various (non-adjoining) parts in the video if you want.
There are three same ways to time each of the three elements on the video lesson timeline, question balloons, replay points and skipped parts. You can either "drag" them with mouse, use the second-adjuster or type in any timestamp in between the left and right second-adjusters.
In case of skipped parts ("skips"), you can also drag the beginning and the end of the interval.
We thought that one of the most annoying things about working with videos is when you get a question and want to watch the relevant scene again, you have to try many times to find the exact spot where the scene starts. This is why we developed a feature to allow the author to mark the point in the video where the relevant scene starts. When a question pops up in the video lesson, you simply click the Replay button and the video will replay the exact scene that your student needs to hear again to answer the question.
We encourage you to add replays to each question, because that is the only way to rewind in the video when you are playing the video lesson. You can time each replay point precisely, that is select the point in the video where it should play back from.
We have a cool autosaving feature, like the big Google. After any character you type or any change you make, we will almost instantly save your changes. Should any glitch occur while saving (e.g. you lose your internet access), stop editing your lesson, because you will most likely lose any edits.
If you are editing a draft lesson, and still don't want to publish it, when you need to quit, just make sure to click the Save button to save your last changes - just to be on the safe side not even one character gets lost.
You switch your lesson from "draft" (when you start from scratch, you have a draft) to "published". Next, you will be taken to the public page of the video lesson. Just click "Play" on the video and your lesson will start.
Or you can go to your mypage/my creations/my draft video lessons and find your video, then click on it.
This may happen if you lose your internet access. Then you will see an "Error during video" error message instead of the time of the last autosave, on the left of the draft/published switch. Stop editing because chances are that any new changes will be lost.
If you get your internet access back, you can continue editing, and if you kept your editor window open, any changes you've made after losing your internet access will be saved.
A: With publishing videos it's the same system as with uploading worksheets. You need to provide certain information ("tags") before you publish it to enable others to find it in our library. So-called "Required tags" are:
1. The title of your lesson;
2. The description of your lesson;
3. The lesson type (e.g. Meaning check - deeper comprehension task);
4. The student type it's designed for;
5. The proficiency level it's designed for;
6. Your preferred copyright (of course, your copyright only pertains to the quiz questions you create, and not the video itself, since that is the creation of someone else).
Just leave it as "Draft" (the default state of every new video lesson). You can go back to it later. You will find it in Mypage/my creations/my draft video lessons. When you are done working on it, switch it to "Published" to share it with colleagues the world over.
Your draft and published video lessons are in Mypage/my creations (click on your avatar in the top right corner). Here you'll also find your copied&edited video lessons. These are lessons made by others that you wish to edit, e.g. correct a typo or tailor it to your group. We thought that since you are adding your own work to it, the best place for copied&edited lessons are among your creations.
If you click on the blue dropdown menu on the right of the type field, and select the category you need, we will automatically generate the list of all the resources in that category.
Another mypage menu is "My favorites". Suprise, surprise! Here you will find your favorited printables, projectables and video lessons.
Generating a list of all the resources in a given category is done the same way as in Mypage/my creations.
There are two scenarios.
Scenario 1: Making big changes - do it in the draft version.
When you need to make a big change to an already published lesson, I recommend that you switch your lesson from "Published" to "Draft", because any changes - even changes you make by mistake - are automatically saved by the system (autosave), and will go live immediately. Therefore, it's best to switch it to draft status first and thus make it temporarily unavailable to the public. When you are done, switch it back to "Published".
Scenario 2: Making small changes - do it in the "live" (published) version
However, if you just want to make a small change, like correcting a typo, maybe it's best to make your changes directly in the published version without pulling it off from the public video lesson library. Imagine that someone might take your video lesson to their class and right when they are about to start the video, it is unavailable. That would be a nightmare. And imagine your lesson is wildly popular. That would be hundreds of nightmares. So correct the typo in the published version, just pay extra care to not change anything that was already OK, because - like I said - any change is saved by the autosave, and will go live immediately.
If you like a video lesson and want to stash it for later, you can simply mark it as a "Favorite". But what to do if you need to correct a typo or tailor it to your group (e.g. add extra questions or skip a part of the video)? I mean it's someone else's video lesson, you can't just go ahead and change things in it.
The solution is to save a copy - a "clone" if you will - of the video lesson for yourself, and make your changes in that copy (instead of the original).
How it works:
1. You need to log in first.
2. Then click the "Copy & edit" button on the page of the video, below the video screen.
3. Find the copied lesson in Mypage/my creations, and select My copied & edited video lessons from the blue dropdown menu on the right of the type field. (That's why you need to log in, so we know who you are and can put the copy into your Mypage.)
4. Click on the video in the list, then on the page of the video, click Edit to make any changes.
Copied & edited video lessons are not shared back to the community at the moment. They are private, visible only to you, and only accessible in your personal Mypage/my creations menu.
We can discuss this matter as a community, because it is a complex question that touches on intellectual rights and deep questions of what would be the most beneficial form of collaboration among teachers, where we could be building on top of each other's works.
You cannot download the lessons, but you can always play them from iSLCollective as long as you have internet access. Unfortunately, even if we did solve this technically, downloading would be against Youtube's terms of use.
