Financial Literacy Workshops
Financial Literacy Workshops
I lead financial literacy workshops for community groups, workplaces, schools, and other partner organizations. I work with each partner to understand the financial questions and decisions their audience is facing, then design the content around those needs rather than using a single fixed curriculum.
Financial Foundations for WiN
Financial Foundations is a monthly financial education series I run with Women in Neuroscience, a nonprofit that supports students from under-resourced and underserved communities pursuing careers in neuroscience. The sessions are virtual, free, and designed for first-year college students.
The series covers practical financial decisions students are likely to face during the year, including budgeting and paychecks, savings, credit, financial aid, taxes, investing, insurance, internships, and first jobs. Each session is timed to be useful when that topic is most relevant. [link: full series outline]
Sessions are designed to stand alone, so students can join even if they missed an earlier one. Topics include:
Budgeting and your paycheck
Savings and health coverage
Credit and credit cards
Financial aid, loans, and scholarships
Filing taxes
Investing basics
Insurance
Internships, first jobs, and total compensation
Each session is about 90 minutes and includes a simple reference guide, a worked example, a worksheet, and a short resource list. Every session ends with one practical step students can take right away.
Programming for other audiences
The same approach adapts to very different groups.
Employees and working families: budgeting, debt and credit, emergency savings, workplace benefits, retirement, insurance, investing, and financial decisions during a job transition.
Students and young adults: a first paycheck, credit cards and scores, student loans, taxes, saving and investing, evaluating job offers and benefits, and avoiding scams.
Small-business owners, independent workers, and child-care providers: cash-flow planning, separating personal and business finances, taxes, retirement saving, credit, and financial resilience.
Older adults, parents, nonprofit clients, veterans, and first-time homebuyers all have different needs again, and I am glad to develop material for audiences not listed here.
Formats
A single targeted workshop, a short series, recurring programming, or online sessions. I can also build worksheets, calculators, and resources your organization keeps using with clients after the sessions end.
Where it helps, I use a short pre-session survey so the emphasis matches what the group actually wants to know.
Sessions are free to partner organizations.
Scope
This is neutral, accessible financial education and not individualized financial or investment advice.
Get in touch
If your organization serves people who would benefit, I would like to hear from you. Happy to start with one session and see whether it is useful before planning anything larger.
