私たちのものの見方や感じ方は、私たちが生きる社会・文化環境に依存しています。またその社会・文化環境を作り、維持しているのも、そこに生きる私たちです。こうした「心と社会・環境の相互構成過程」に注目し、これまで特に以下のトピックを中心に研究をしてきました。詳細につきましては、単著「文化神経科学：文化は心や脳をどのように形作るか」（2025年、勁草書房）をご覧ください。
・社会・文化における慣習・信念と個人の認知・感情認識との関わり
中でも、コミュニケーション様式と感情的発話の情報処理に注目してきました。文脈に依存したコミュニケーション様式を反映し、日本やフィリピンにおける人々は、発話を理解する際、その文脈的な手がかりの１つである「声の調子」に注意を向けやすいことがわかりました。一方、文脈にあまり依存しないコミュニケーション様式を反映し、北米における人々は、発話を理解する際、その中心的な情報である「意味」に注意を向けやすいことがわかりました。こうした文化差は専ら認知心理学的な手法を用い、反応時間を測定して調べてきましたが、最近では、その判断時の事象関連脳電位に着目した研究も行いました。さらに、「声の調子」に対して注意を向ける傾向は北米の人において弱いものの、例えば悲しみや排斥のように社会関係の損失を喚起させるような状況、また他者の目があり、対人的な関係志向性が喚起されるような状況では、彼らであっても 「声の調子」に対して敏感になることも明らかにしてきました。関連する研究は以下の通りです。

・社会生態学的要因と個人の認知との関わり
個人の行動や認知に影響を与えるのは、コミュニケーションのやり方といった文化的な慣習だけではありません。人口移動に関連したさまざまな社会生態学的要因も影響を与えます。特にこれまで自発的移住に注目し、一般的に相互協調的な自己観や集団主義的な傾向が強いと言われる日本においても、自発的移住の歴史がある北海道では、同様の歴史をもつ北米同様に、個人主義的な考え方が見られることを明らかにしてきました。また、自発的移住と同様に人口移動に関連した変数として、住居の流動性が挙げられます。これについては、人々の地域に対する無条件ないしは条件つき協力のパターンがその地域の住居の流動性と大きく関 わっていることを日米で明らかにしました。関連する研究は以下の通りです。
