Student Agency in the PYP: From Choice Boards to Voice in Planning

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆?

Student agency is the heartbeat of the IB PYP, where learners are empowered to take meaningful and intentional action in their learning journey. It’s about students having a real say-voice, choice, and ownership-in what, how, and why they learn. This approach transforms classrooms into dynamic spaces where students become partners in their education, building confidence, responsibility, and a sense of purpose

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Imagine a student who, inspired by a unit on the environment, chooses to investigate how waste is managed in their neighborhood. They design a survey, collect data, and present their findings, taking action to improve local recycling efforts.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:

When students feel heard and valued, their engagement and motivation soar. Student agency fosters independence, critical thinking, and creativity skills essential for lifelong learning and future success. It prepares students not just for academic achievement, but for meaningful participation in society

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: A class is studying community helpers. Instead of the teacher assigning roles, students brainstorm and vote on which helpers to invite for interviews. This process boosts their investment and curiosity, making the learning experience richer and more memorable.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗬𝗣: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

𝟭. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆

Start by creating a safe, inclusive environment where students feel respected and capable. Co-create classroom agreements and model reflective thinking, showing that every voice matters.

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: At the start of the year, students and teachers work together to set classroom norms, like “We listen to each other” and “We try new things,” establishing a foundation for agency.

𝟮. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲

Offer students meaningful choices in their learning activities and invite their input on what and how they learn. Choice boards are a powerful tool, allowing students to pick tasks that match their interests and strengths.

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: For a math review, students use a choice board with activities like creating a math game, solving real-life problems, or teaching a concept to a peer. This variety keeps students motivated and engaged.

𝟯. 𝗖𝗼-𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

Involve students in planning by gathering their questions and ideas at the start of each unit. This ensures learning is relevant and student-driven, fostering deeper inquiry and ownership

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Before starting a unit on ancient civilizations, students brainstorm what they want to learn-like “How did people travel?” or “What games did children play?”-and these questions guide the unit’s direction.

𝟰. 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

Regular reflection helps students recognize their growth and set new learning goals. Tools like journals and self-assessment checklists make reflection a natural part of the learning process

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: After a group project, students reflect on what worked well, what was challenging, and what they’d do differently next time, helping them take charge of their learning journey.

𝟱. 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Encourage students to turn their learning into action, whether through community projects, presentations, or campaigns. Celebrating these actions reinforces the value of agency and real-world impact.

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Inspired by a unit on water conservation, students design and lead a school-wide campaign to reduce water usage, tracking their progress and sharing results with the community.

𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀: 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱

Embracing student agency doesn’t require a complete overhaul-begin with small, manageable steps and build from there. Stay open to feedback, and remember that your growth as a facilitator is just as important as your students’ progress.

• Start Simple: Offer students a choice in daily activities or assignments to build their confidence and comfort with agency.

• Reflect Regularly: Set aside time for both you and your students to reflect on what’s working and where you can improve.

• Seek Support: Collaborate with colleagues, share experiences, and learn from one another to strengthen your practice and gather new ideas.

• Choice Boards: In a language unit, students choose whether to write a story, perform a skit, or create a comic strip, allowing them to showcase their strengths.

• Student-Led Conferences: Students prepare portfolios and lead discussions with parents and teachers about their progress, setting future goals.

• Co-Planning Units: Teachers use student-generated questions to shape inquiry units, ensuring learning is meaningful and relevant.
