What is ISem?
The Internet Seminar (ISem) is an annual, year-long international mathematical event for Master's and PhD students. Each year, it explores diverse topics in analysis and related areas.
Founded in 1997 by Rainer Nagel and the Functional Analysis Workgroup at the University of Tübingen, ISem has successfully completed 27 editions. This innovative concept has brought together students from various backgrounds, resulted in several monographs, and earned a teaching award. Each ISem consists of three stages: lectures, projects, and a workshop. Below, we outline the organizational details for ISem28.
The Lecture Phase:
We will offer 15 virtual lectures, provided weekly as PDFs starting in mid-October 2024. Local coordinators, typically an instructor or a senior postdoc, will organize in-person discussions at universities based on the lecture notes. These lectures will be accompanied by weekly exercises.
One local group's solution, corrected by the virtual lecturer team, will be shared with all participants. To facilitate discussions, questions, comments, and corrections, we are setting up a Zulip channel.
Typically, 200 to 400 students participate in this phase. The ISem28 lecturer team includes Noa Bihlmaier (Tübingen), Asgar Jamneshan (Dresden), Henrik Kreidler (Wuppertal), and Nick Ruoff (Tübingen).
The Project Phase:
Following a brief application process, approximately 40 students who have successfully completed the lecture phase will form small groups of three or four to work on specialized topics related to the lectures. Each group, consisting of students from various universities, will be supervised by an experienced researcher.
The lecture team will prepare a tentative list of project topics. However, we strongly encourage and support project suggestions initiated by participants.
The Final Workshop:
The project groups present their work at an in-person, week-long final workshop, complemented by one or two talks from senior experts. It will take place in Wuppertal (Germany) from July 13 to July 19 2025.
