2D EXTENSION
The supporting image is the proposed 2D extension of the Barnes' fragment. This extension reflects the completed research on tombstone shapes in the 17th century through the three-tiered top. This extension also takes into consideration the placement of the existing fragment and proposes the extension based on this position. The length was determined through mirroring the existing fragment and was only 3/4 of an inch from the actual length.
DOCUMENTATION
An example of completed sketchbook documentation on the fragment. This documentation outlines shapes, dimensions, and conditions. The dimensions are color-coded with orange lines representing vertical measurements, red representing horizontal measurements, and green representing depth.
The drawing in the bottom left corner is a representation of the proposed extension with Daedalus Art.
COLOR
A Photoshop rendering of the completed 2D extension that has been colored to resemble the existing fragment's hues.
The proposed extension of the fragment, combining the existing fragment with the newly discovered fragment at Boston Parks and Rec. This extension also includes an extension of the bottom right corner with a stone material.
IDENTIFYING MATERIALS
Slate is a metamorphic rock that consists primarily of minerals, such as quartz, illite, and muscovite.
The composition of the slate tombstone fragment primarily consists of silicon (53%), iron (28), and aluminum (13%). This data was connected with the assistance of Noah Bronowich.
Crystals are present in slate and all face the same direction, which is the principal reason for the vulnerable delamination of slate.
MATERIAL CHOICES
The materials required to execute this restoration are Acetone, B72 (5%, 10%, and 25%), epoxy, and the additional slate fragment at Boston Parks and Rec.
The compatibility of the two slate pieces rejoining was optional. These are the original pieces, and putting them back together resulted in a positive response from the materials. Additionally, adding and using the additional chemicals and materials listed above resulted in a positive response because of the frequency with which these techniques are used on slate tombstones in the Daedalus lab.
