About the program

On this page you will find the funding details and program requirements for trainees at the Masters, PhD and postdoctoral levels. At the bottom of the page is a suggested timeline for completing the program. This page is intended for trainees who are already in the IRTG; information about how to apply can be found on the CAPnet website here.

Program details

Master's level

2 year position / $5,000.00/yr

Program Requirements:

  • Participation in weekly joint seminars/lectures
  • Participation in annual research retreat
  • Participation in meetings with non-academic collaborators and advisors


PhD level

3 year position / $15,000.00/yr

Program Requirements:

  • Complete a research project in Germany with one or more of the international IRTG collaborators
  • Participate in a collaboration/internship with one of the non-academic partners
  • Participation in weekly joint seminars/lectures
  • Participation in annual research retreat
  • Participation in meetings with non-academic collaborators and advisors


Post-Doctoral Fellow level

2 year position / $50,000.00/yr

Program Requirements:

  • Complete a research project in Germany with one or more of the international IRTG collaborators
  • Participate in a collaboration/internship with one of the non-academic partners
  • Participation in weekly joint seminars/lectures
  • Participation in annual research retreat
  • Participation in meetings with non-academic collaborators and advisors


Affiliates

Affiliates may participate in aspects of the program, but are not considered full members and are not funded from NSERC.


Suggested program timeline


Below is a suggested timeline for the completion of the program. Of course everyone's path will be a bit different, but this should give you an idea of the milestones you need to meet during your time as a trainee. Every year at the annual retreat you will be asked to fill out a progress report form with your PIs; this is a good time to check your progress against the requirements of the program.


Year 1

All:

  • Review IRTG program requirements/degree requirements. Plan any academic courses as necessary
  • Attend ongoing seminars and lectures
  • Watch recordings of previous lectures (talks given by PIs)
  • Familiarize yourself with potential collaborators in Germany through lecture series and annual IRTG retreat
  • Introduce a seminar speaker at an IRTG journal club
  • Attend annual retreat

PhDs and Post-docs:

  • Attend industry partner workshops and brainstorm with PIs about internship possibilities
  • Post-docs: Connect with your German PI and begin planning research project


Year 2

All:

  • Attend ongoing seminars and lectures
  • Introduce a seminar speaker if you haven't yet
  • Attend annual retreat

PhDs and Post-docs:

  • Connect with potential industry collaborators and plan and execute an internship/collaboration
  • Identify your German PI and begin planning research project with your German/Canadian PIs online and at the annual retreat
  • Plan your research stay (visa, accommodation, etc.)
  • Post-docs: Complete research stay abroad


Year 3 (PhD only)

  • Attend ongoing seminars and lectures
  • Complete research stay abroad
  • Introduce a seminar speaker if you haven't yet
  • Attend annual retreat
