Presentation Guideline

Guideline for paper presentation and discussion of IPMB PEM group 

Presenter:


Please prepare a 25-30 min presentation (about 20-30 slides) as follows:

1. Title:

-Briefly introduce the major purpose and/or finding of this paper

-Mention the authors and their affiliations


2. Introduction:

-Provide background information about the addressed biological questions and/or the new technique/technology

-Introduce why this biological question or technology important, what are the related questions asked or techniques/methods used previously


3. Materials and Methods:

This part can be combined into the results section


4. Results:

-Mention the purpose of this experiment or what is the question asked?

-Mention the key materials and methods used

A. you may use outline to explain the experimental procedures

B. Although you are not expected to know the details of the methods used, you should understand their principles

C. Explain the results by going through the figure or table

D. Conclusion or summary made by each particular result


5. Conclusions/Summary and Discussion

A. What are the major conclusions of this paper

B. How are the obtained results in comparison to related published information?

C. What are the future directions or applications can be derived from this work?

Control the time and give the lab members priority in asking questions than PIs.

Please try your best to read the paper in details especially those most interesting or relevant to your research. You would benefit the most if you think about the following questions and ask questions to stimulate discussion. Be Brave!

Is the title of this paper appropriate or informative?

1.     Is it a good paper? What is the strength and weakness of this paper

2.     Are the data good enough or sufficient to draw the conclusions the authors made? Any over-interpretation?

3.     Are the experiments or data that are important but missing in this paper? If so, what are they?
