Metabrush is a great app for generating textures for use in blending with images in iColorama. Here I use Metabrush to generate an interesting texture, which I use in iColorama to blend with several versions of the same starting image. I finish by painting black around the face for a mask-like effect. This not only lends mystery to the final result, but also the simplicity of composition needed to offset the complexity of texture.
I started with this photo from the Sktchy app.
In iColorama, I smoothed the image using Effect/Denoise Smooth preset, Style/Coherence, and Style/Flow, all at full opacity. I cropped in Form/Crop.
I plan to paint in Metabrush, using this brush image. It's a texture from Texture/Metal in iColorama. To create this file, I opened a blank canvas in iColorama, applied this texture, and saved the file.
Now I opened the image of the woman in the Metabrush app. On a new layer, I painted all over the canvas with a hard square brush. The result is a textured image the same size as the image of the woman. I saved this for later use in blending.
Now I opened the image of the woman in iColorama. Using Effect/Blend, I blended the texture onto the woman. Then I used Effect/Denoise for some smoothing.
I applied Adjust/Tonelab preset 4.
I applied Style/Water preset 9, with the Texture and Distortion sliders set to zero.
This mask-like image is one of the outputs from a previous blend step in another image, using a different blend mode and slider settings.
In iColorama, using Effect/Blend, I blended the mask-like image over the Tonelab image, putting one at an angle to the other, and trying several blending modes and slider settings. Then I blended the resulting image over the Water image, again at a slight angle, again trying several blend modes and slider settings.
Using Brush/Paint, I used a black triangular hard brush to paint away the areas surrounding the face. Then I used Brush/Tools and selected the Burn Preset to darken the edges of the mask along her left jaw, for a more natural transition to shadow. I used Form/Warp to drag the dark area in the top left off the canvas. To prepare for using Effect/Raise, I applied Effect/Denoise. Then I applied Effect/Raise. Finally, I cropped a bit from the bottom of the canvas.
As a finishing touch, I applied Tone/Enhance for some color on the lit side of her face.
