I love the theme of a hollow head into which you can see empty space. A mask is a one way of suggesting a hollow head. Here I reused a Trimaginator-based image that I made previously, that had interesting texture for the surface of the mask. I gave that previously made image more three-dimensional shape by distorting it over a face. Using black paint to paint away the background helps to make a mask shape. Blending the image with itself produces the horizontal symmetry needed for a mask. The processing steps darkened the eye areas so that the final result appears to have holes cut away where the eyes should be, as in a mask.
I started with this image that I created previously. You can see how I made it here.
I also used this image that I created previously. You can see how I created it here.
In iColorama, using Effect/Distort, I distorted the girl over the above image, adjusting the size, position and rotation so that the locations of the features of the top and bottom images matched as much as possible. Then I used Effect/Blur to blur it, in preparation for the upcoming Raise step. Effect/Raise emphasizes all detail in an image, and can amplify noise. So it is important to smooth the image beforehand, in most cases, particularly after a Distort step, which can often introduce unwanted noise and detail.
Now I applied Effect/Raise to emphasize the lines.
In Brush/Paint, I used a large soft round brush and black paint to paint away the background, using a brush mask to protect the face.
Using Form/Warp, I warped the head to get an interesting shape.
I applied a texture in Texture/Metal at medium opacity, to get a good color as well as texture.
The left side of the image is much more interesting than the right side. So I used Effect/Blend to create a symmetrical image. I did this by blending the image with itself in Multiply mode, flipping the top image on the x axis for a symmetrical result.
I modified the color using Tone/Enhance. I chose a preset that helped to give the image a more three-dimensional aspect because of the tone variations.
For the final image, I used Form/Warp to warp the image to make the mouth more pouty.
