Pictured above are two different cultures of Indianapolis: downtown (left) and Fletcher's Place Community Garden located southeast of downtown (right). When walking through the area, the first thing that you notice is how modern the city is with all the high end restaurants and shopping. While you don't see the issue that the community is facing like food insecurity and homelessness. The people that live there don't know the issues that the surrounding communities face. At Fletcher's Place, it was very obvious that the area surrounding Fletcher's Place Community Center is more rural than the inner-city. They had just began work to brighten up the community by creating the garden and painting the fence.
The picture on the left is of the Indianapolis Group from Iowa. This group is involved in Fraternity and Sorority Life and is all different ages and majors. And the one on the right is our group with fraternity and sorority members from Iowa State University. At dinner, we discussed the issues that the community was facing. ISU students did not know that food deserts were even an issue, while our group had been discussing the issue since the class began. Even though we both traveled from universities, our knowledge about the issues that faced Indy was very different.
