Looking to join the 3D Club at Iowa? Here's some information you'll want to know!
General Meetings are typically held every Friday from 4:30–5:30PM during the Fall and Spring semesters in room 2133 at the Seamans Center.
No need to contact us ahead of time—just walk in and we’ll be happy to greet you! If you’d like to inquire in advance, feel free to send us an email.
At the first meeting each semester, we’ll introduce ourselves, explain how the club works, and give a brief tour of our club space. We’ll also have barcodes for you to scan: one to join our Microsoft Teams group and another for attendance.
All following meetings will open with the first 5–10 minutes dedicated to sharing progress on club projects. After that, we’ll break into small groups to collaborate on club projects together!
Attendance is key to retaining your member perks.
Active members are expected to attend at least 50% of general meetings within a given semester. If you can’t make it to meetings, you can attend Open Hours to make up for absences.
As long as you remain an active member, you’ll have completely free access to all club-run spaces, tools, and materials—including for personal projects!
We welcome personal projects, but to achieve our mission, we appreciate when members focus on club projects.
The executive board will encourage members to maintain good attendance, but may revoke club space access for those who appear to have lost interest.
Gain access to club resources by completing a brief training.
Training includes a 12-part series of short to medium-length instructional videos, followed by an in-person meeting where an experienced member will guide you through starting your first print and review basic safety and rules.
These videos will introduce you to the most important aspects of 3D printing, covering both the software and hardware. No need to memorize everything—we’ll guide you through the process until you feel confident!
Upon completion, you'll receive access to our club space (located in 2312 SC) within 7 days. You will then have 24/7 access to our club space and possibly the Burge Makerspace (if eligible).
Attend a General Meeting (Fridays – 4:30PM in room 2133 SC)
If this time doesn't work for you, join us in open hours to get set up.
During a General Meeting (or open hours), you will receive access to our Microsoft Teams group.
Within the Teams group, complete our 3D printing training modules.
Once training is complete, you will have 24/7 access to our club space in 2312 SC (and 3010C in the Makerspace, if applicable).
Congrats! You can now begin 3D printing.
While you're completing training modules and/or waiting to get space access, attend open hours and we can help you 3D print items.
Once training is complete, please allow 1 week for your access to be approved.
