IONS Ireland 2021

IONS Ireland 2021 is moving forward as a virtual conference! Following on from the success of many online conferences over the last year, IONS Ireland will be hosted virtually on the gather.town platform, where we have prepared a virtual space suited for talks, poster presentations, and networking.

The focus of IONS Ireland is on our student attendees. The conference aims to be a valuable experience for students engaged with optics and photonics at all levels, and to help create a professional network between students all around the globe. Get ready to enjoy :

  • A stimulating space for photonics students to present their research amongst their peers.

  • Interesting and relevant student workshops.

  • The opportunity to interact with leading experts in the main technical themes of the conference.

With the decision to go virtual, registration for the conference is now free! Plus, we have many exciting goodies and prizes to give away to those who participate, so follow us on our social media (@2021ions on twitter) for future updates!

Travel Grants for a Post-Conference Networking Event

Are you looking for the opportunity to visit and learn about the optics and photonics research performed in Ireland? We are excited to announce that we will be offering travel grants to the best poster and presentations throughout the conference! The travel grants will offer attendees the chance to visit the Optica chapters in Cork and Dublin, as well as allow them to interact with some of the different research groups in both cities. This is an excellent opportunity for networking and to learn about the research carried out in Ireland.

The trips are currently planned for 2022 (assuming there is no issue with travelling then), and the grants will cover travel, accommodation and food. More information will follow shortly.

Keep an eye on our twitter @2021ions for more updates.

Optica Chapter Special: The Wonderful World of Optics

Share your knowledge with the world! We will have a session where you are invited to present a short video or poster explaining the most important or fascinating optical phenomenon you can think of.

You can make it fun, interactive, thrilling or even funny in a comic format! Your imagination is the limit to make it as engaging as possible. This will be oriented to the general public and shared on our website and YouTube, and we will have a prize for the best contribution. Please let us know if you or your chapter are interested by sending an email to ions.ireland2021@gmail.com with the subject ‘Wonderful World of Optics’ and we will get back to you with all the details!

Host Student Chapters | Tyndall | UCC | UCD

Ireland has been fascinated with light for over 5000 years. Built around 3200BC (before both the pyramids and Stonehenge), Newgrange was used as a burial tomb for the high chieftains of Ireland. The tomb was engineered to capture direct sunlight once a year on the winter solstice, marking the start of the tribes new year.

This year we’re excited to welcome students from around the world to Ireland! The Tyndall & University College Cork chapter and the University College Dublin chapter will co-host IONS 2021!
