This course introduces students to the basic tools of film, including cinematic elements and genre. Students will learn to recognize, describe, and critically analyze film as an art form and a cultural product. From a diverse range of films from across the globe, within various eras and communities, the course investigates how film represents, reinforces, and subverts cultural values, identities, and worldviews. Through exposure to global perspectives, students will be able to analyze film both through formal practice and sociocultural context.
This Global Theme course plays an important role in the Charlotte Core. It focuses on engaging students with the world in which they live as both individuals as well as members of society. You will learn the following engagement across perspectives skills while practicing critical thinking.
Ask questions about familiar and unfamiliar communities and/or cultures
Discuss cultural similarities and differences in perspectives, behaviors, expressions, and/or communication styles across space and/or time
Interpret events, issues, problems, etc. from multiple perspectives
Being able to work and collaborate with diverse groups of people and to approach problems creatively are skills that employers want and that you need to succeed in college and your daily life. The Charlotte Core provides you with many opportunities to develop this engagement across perspectives competency in your Global and Local Theme courses, major, and co-curricular activities.
Other Theme courses and courses in your major will build on the skills you develop in this class and provide you with even more opportunities to practice them. The Global Theme Courses (1501 and 1502) engage issues related to areas outside of the United States. Assignments from this course may be used for general education continuous learning improvement regarding the competencies. All identifying information will be removed.
Ideally, you should have access to a laptop or desktop computer to complete this course. However, I have taken care to design a course that can also be completed from a smartphone. If you intend to complete this course on a phone, please let me know and inform me if there are any problems that arise. Your feedback will help me improve our learning environment to support more students.
You will record voice or video comments in this course using a tool called VoiceThread. I understand that recording voice or video comments may make you feel uneasy. I hope you'll lean into this and trust me. I have found that using VoiceThread is a lot easier for students when compared to just writing alone. Let's give it a try! If speaking is not an option for you, no worries!
To complete the VoiceThread activities, you will need:
either a microphone or webcam connected to your computer (these are often built into your device) or
a smartphone/tablet
You will use Canvas, which is accessed through your UNCC account, and VoiceThread for this course. Neither requires you to create an account or download anything unless you are using a phone as your course access method.
I strongly recommend that you download the free Canvas Student App before this course starts so you can stay more connected with our course. When prompted to find your school, enter UNCC and then select our course from your Dashboard. You can also access Canvas from any desktop/laptop computer by going to this link.
If you have a computer or laptop, you may view and participate in our VoiceThread assignments with no additional software. For more information about how to use VoiceThread watch this video from Oglethorpe University.
If you have a computer or laptop, you may view and participate in our Perusall assignments with no additional software. For more information about how to use Perusall visit the How to Use Perusall page on Canvas.
