I am from airplanes,
From Advil and attitude
I am from the lows under the highs,
I am from the red wagon
The weeping willow
Whose hair like limbs I remember
As if they were my own.
I am from bald and bubbly
From beast and beauty (Neeley said she really liked this line)
I’m from the yes
And the no’s
I’m from love my darling
With an impaled heart
And fifty stitches I sewed myself
I’m from Prince and Princess
Fresh grilled chicken and burnt rice.
From the intellect my grandma lost
To cancer,
The thoughts my mother blocked out to keep her sanity (my mom said this made her sad)
Under my fingertips were loops and whorls
Containing blood,
A sift of lost history
To hide beneath my nose.
I am from those moments
Fixed before I flew
Flying from the family tree
I have grown up around family members who work in the health care system. Growing up with a dad who is a doctor is very eye opening and I was able to understand what the life of a physcian would look like.
My younger self has influenced me the most. My younger self never saw a female in my family break the gender norms. I want to become that role model for someone one day.
