Gray Colour: Ongoing Courses
SMO Senior has ended June 2020
SMO Junior Level 2 has ended June 2020
This chart shows how students will progress from SMO Junior Level 1 course to higher level courses. They are not limited by age - although significant Math Olympiad experience is required for the highest level course.
Each course lasts one year and will include SMO Past Papers practice before the exam. Detailed solutions are given in class. The courses are increasing in difficulty - the hardest course correspond to SMO Open.
This class is designed for Sec 1 / Year 1 students who will be taking SMO Junior for the first time. The course will give a comprehensive introduction to Algebra, and examine the intricacies of algebraic equations. Topics in Geometry, Combinatorics, and Number Theory are also covered, with emphasis on rigorous proof-writing and case discussion.
The course content takes inspiration from the Cambridge Mathematics Tripos Syllabus and Polya’s How to Solve It. The aim of the course is to revisit the basics and learn to write proper, rigorous proofs starting from axioms. This is much more difficult than most people think; there is so much we take for granted that we miss out on interesting fundamental ideas that will have big impacts later.
Students will need to submit written proofs as homework. Expect to spend 2 – 3 hours a week on writing proofs in good handwriting and clean layout.
•Date and Time: Saturdays 1630 - 1830
•Skill Level: SMO Senior and Open
•Goals: To write clear, concise, and rigorous proofs for SMO Round 2
•Requirements: Student should be familiar with solving open-ended problems
This course introduces many topics of mathematical thinking and methods at a high level. The aim is for students to appreciate the power of these methods when applied to extremely complicated problems. The focus of the course is on creativity, exploration, and motivation.
Students are expected to spend 1 – 2 hours a week thinking about the homework.
•Date and Time: Sundays 1630 – 1830
•Skill Level: SMO Junior
•Goals: To develop ideas and techniques for open-ended problems
•Requirements: Students should be able to qualify for SMOJ Round 2
This class is designed for Sec 3 / Year 3 students who will be taking SMO Senior for the first time. The course will go into deep exploration of the Trigonometric Functions and the central role they play in SMO Senior Algebra and Geometry questions. More advanced topics such as Sequences and Series and Group Theory will be the highlight of this course.
This class is designed for Sec 2 / Year 2 students who will be taking SMO Junior for the last time. The course will go into deeper analysis of algebraic identities and tackle more complicated problems. Topics in Geometry, Combinatorics, and Number Theory are also covered more deeply. The material discussion is more interesting and thought-provoking than Level 1.
