I have no affiliation with Google. I am not making any money from this project. This is just a fun and free thing I'm doing to help other people get the most out of Google Sheets.
This guide was written for Google Sheets, NOT Microsoft Excel. There is a lot of overlap between Sheets and Excel, but they are not the same. A lot of the processes in this guide are different, or not available, in Excel.
I strongly recommend using a computer, not a mobile phone if you’re going to be making significant edits in Google Sheets. All of the below steps are written for use on a computer and most of the processes are different or not available at all on a mobile device.
If you want to make your own google sheets documents, you’ll need a Google account which you can create for free at this link, if you don’t have one already.
This guide is accurate at the time of writing (winter/spring 2024), but Google could make changes to Google Sheets at any time.
I may or may not update this guide in the future as Google changes features.
Google rarely takes features completely away, so if you’re trying to do something and the process isn’t working out when you follow the steps in the guide, google it to find instructions on how to do it in the updated google layout.
This guide will use a lot of sample spreadsheet screenshots to show concepts. For example, a list of volunteer shifts, lists of names, etc. All of the information in the examples was made-up for educational purposes. It does not refer to any real person or event.
Lastly, I love Google Sheets and have used it extensively for 10+ years; however, I don’t have any formal training and learned everything I know just by trial and error and googling whenever I hit a snag. I mention this for two reasons:
Anyone can learn Google Sheets!
Any mistakes are the result of ignorance.
