Link to InVision Here: Review the Tasks from the User Tasks Tab, perform tasks as a primary user (Mother Molly), a secondary user (Grandpa Greg), or a school nurse (Nurse Natalie).
1 . The “Calculate Insulin” Button is clearly separated from the Confirm Dosage Button which replaces the original “Submit” button. This change implements a Clear UI Design pattern - where the order of actions is aligned better with the physical action of taking a BG having a thought, documenting it in the clearer comments section and calculating the insulin. Then, providing the ability to adjust that dose and store the correct value.
2 . Upon Confirming the dose a miss-match box will appear that implements the forgiving UI Design Pattern - providing the user the ability to “cancel” and go back and correct a mistake before committing to it. The Figure and Ground aspect of this Q&A pop-up enforces its required accuracy.
3 . Change Profile was added for profiles dealing with multiple patients using Insul-Ease, providing a flexible experience for someone like a Nurse who may need to juggle patients. The Profile selection page also provides a “Last Seen” Timestamp to give a sense of relief - if a nurse has many patients, she may not remember if she got to each student.
4 . The Regimen Section is more clear and direct to the user - separating the BG Factors from the Carb Factors. “Next appointment” was also included in the patient info section, providing a more direct view of the appointment.
5 . Day at a Glance shows timestamp, instead of prior meals and stores the comments, preventing confusion.
6 . “Doctors Appointment” Update section of the Regimen Screen was moved to the top, since this information is more likely to update instead of the doctors name and location. A “Calendar Selection” Icon will open a calendar to select the date, rather than requiring a valid date and time entry format by the user. Regimen section also separates the BG Factors from the Carb Factors in the same fashion as the header section, aligning with the user’s mental model when they are ready to update it. 3 update buttons also became 1 update button. These features provide a more simple experience, requiring very little of the user’s brain capacity.
Why Insul-Ease? Log Less, Live Well.
The overall layout of the revised UI for each section is Clear, Direct, Forgiving, and Simple.
Various user profiles can be set up to align with mental models of a primary/expert user (Mother Molly) or a secondary/novice user (Grandpa Greg). A Clinician Profile (Nurse Natalie) can be configured to hide certain data to provide more privacy for the patient and his/her family, but still give access to the error reducing digital calculation and storage of BG and Carb data at all times of the day - the other tabs besides the home tab become invisible to the Clinician profile. Insul-Ease can not only calculate an accurate dose for a user, the UI’s flexibility gives control to users who will need to adjust that does “a bit higher” or “a bit lower.”
“Diabetes Management is not only a Science, it really becomes an Art.” **
Insul-Ease is designed with the patient in mind, but also all of the members of that patient’s life who have struggled with fear of miss-calculating, and frustration with “hard-to-read and update”- BG/Dose Log Books. Trends can be found and followed using the log and graph features of the application, and more accurate factors can be suggested by healthcare providers to stabilize blood sugars, remove a manual error-prone process, and provide peace of mind that the right tools exist to keep those affected by Type 1 healthier and happier.
