Yes, I am THE Institutional Economist. You may know me from my academic writings, my articles in international newspapers, my one appearance on BBC World News, my attendance and presentations at virtually every conference around the world or, if you're really savvy, that time I was on Jeopardy! in 1999 (or I played volleyball against you in the 1990s and 2000s). Either way, this website is meant to be a repository of my work and a way for you to get to know my thoughts and research better.
In a nutshell (cue Austin Powers reference here), I work on institutions, why they are, how they change, and what causes them to be/not be/be different. I especially am interested in the financial sector and how it influences and is influenced by politics (under the broader heading of political economy of finance). I also have done work in the macrofoundations of institutional change, how monetary policy influences the rule of law and how monetary institutions come to be; along these lines, I have a particular interest in property rights. And, oh yeah, I like (and teach) trade and the environment too.
I am the Head of the International Management Institute and Professor of International Business Policy at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) School of Management and Law. I retain my other affiliations, mainly Professor at Kozminski University, and as a fellow with CEIBS Shanghai and NTU Shanghai. In a previous life, I was President of CASE - Center for Social and Economic Research in Poland, and I retain a fellowship there. Until February 25, 2022, I was a visiting Professor at RANEPA in Moscow, but resigned due to Moscow's heinous unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Also on Google Scholar.
I can't update this thing fast enough. Which is why I started the website.
I comment on a lot of things in a lot of places. Here you can see and read some of this commentary.
I don't just write furiously, I also appear on TV... um, furiously.
I sing but not in any organized way - generally it's only karaoke - but music has influenced my life in so many ways. Also, I'm a huge metalhead. Really.
In addition, I played volleyball at Penn and for years afterwards - and actually met my wife at USA Volleyball Nationals in 2005. I still define myself as a volleyball player.
Yep, that time I was on Jeopardy!
