Problem Statement

By 2050 there will be 9.7 billion mouths to feed but no increase in agricultural land area. Pond aquaculture has the potential to produce a large quantity of protein without competing with crops and livestock for land. In Kentucky, one of the most attractive systems for fish production is an in-pond raceway, which makes use of small, pre-existing ponds on farmers' properties. Working with Dr. Ken Semmens of Kentucky State University, we were tasked with designing a water circulation system for these raceways that is remotely powered, highly reliable, efficient, and provides a healthy environment for the fish.
