Since 2018, I have worked with over 100 citizen scientists nationwide to collect sensor data for advancing machine algorithms that track Monarch butterfly migration. These volunteers use centimeter-scale commercial sensors to measure light and temperature intensity in their locations and upload the data to a cloud server. We regularly update our algorithm and share our research progress to keep them engaged. The volunteers come from diverse educational backgrounds (K-12 and university) and various employment sectors, including educational institutions and non-profit organizations, in both urban and rural areas.
Since 2023, I have participated in the SciTech Days event at Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh to showcase a miniature computing system and engage with 6th to 12th-grade students. I set up an exhibition station for approximately five hours and joined Career Conversation Panels to communicate with students in a roundtable format. Last year, I participated in three events focused on 'Health & Medicine,' 'Computing Science,' and 'Physics & Engineering,' attracting 186 students from seven schools, 140 students from six schools, and 316 students from ten schools, respectively.
Since 2022, I have been a category judge for the Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair (PRSEF), evaluating 10-20 projects annually and encouraging middle and high school students, particularly in engineering and robotics. PRSEF motivates students to design, implement, and communicate their original experiments, competing for cash prizes and scholarships, with over 1,000 students from more than 100 schools participating each year.
Since 2022, I have mentored three high school students during the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Hillman Academy summer program, specializing in Computer Science, Biology, and Biomedical Informatics (CoSBBI). This renowned STEM program offers around 60 high school students hands-on scientific research experiences, guided by dedicated faculty across six campus laboratories. I have actively participated in the 8-week program, which combines practical and instructional activities tailored to introduce students to software and computational techniques for addressing clinical and research challenges.
Since 2023, I have participated in the multi-institutional, interdisciplinary STEM Equity Learning Community (SELC) project, an NSF-funded initiative aimed at developing equity-mindedness among participants and promoting this mindset within their own departments. Through monthly meetings, we identified clear disparities across different demographics, with Black/African American or PEER (persons excluded based on ethnicity and/or race) students’ grades consistently trailing behind the average. Additionally, transfer students and those retaking classes tend to have lower-than-average grades. We present our findings and recommendations at multi-institutional meetings and invite key stakeholders from our university to participate.
