Las formas Present Perfect and Past Simple nos pueden llegar a confundir, ya que su traducción y significado en castellano son muy parecidos. Sin embargo, en inglés pueden tener usos muy distintos entre sí, y eso es lo que vamos a comentar en este post.

Present Perfect and Past Simple son tiempos verbales que en castellano se pueden sustituir sin alterar mucho su significado, pero en inglés hay muchas ocasiones en las que solo puedes utilizar uno de los dos, ya que el otro sería incorrecto. Repasemos esas diferencias:

Antes de empezar, es importante comprender cómo se forma un Present Perfect:

DIFERENCES BETWEEN PRESENT PERFECT AND PAST SIMPLE

⚫ Usamos el Present Perfect para describir experiencias.

Usamos el Present Perfect para hablar sobre experiencias en nuestra vida cuando no decimos exactamente cuándo pasaron. Podemos utilizar las expresiones de tiempo ever (alguna vez) en preguntas y never (nunca) en vez de not en frases negativas.

• Have you ever seen anything like this before? – ¿Alguna vez has visto algo así?

• I have never seen anything like this before. – Nunca he visto nada igual.

• Have you been to Rome? / No, I haven’t been there. – Has estado alguna vez en Roma? / No, no he estado nunca allí.

⚫ También usamos el Present Perfect para una situación que conecta el pasado con el presente (cuando el momento específico en el que empezó la acción no se menciona).

Esa situación puede seguir siendo verdad en el presente. En los casos en los que es seguro que en el presente no sigue siendo verdad, se utiliza el Past Simple.

ERROR

• I am living in Spain for three years.❌

• I have lived in Spain for three years.✔️ – He vivido en España 3 años (y aún vivo aquí).

• I worked in Spain for three years.✔️ – Trabajé en España 3 años (pero ya no).

A veces esa situación ya ha finalizado.

• I’ve already finished my project. – Ya he terminado mi proyecto.

• She has just arrived. – Acaba de llegar.

• We have recently sent samples to all our clients. – Recientemente hemos enviado muestras a todos nuestros clientes.

⚫ No usamos oraciones pasadas con el Present Perfect.

Uno de los errores más comunes con Present Perfect and Past Simple es confundir ambas formas. No podemos utilizar el Present Perfect con expresiones de “finished time”. Una expresión de “finished time” es cualquier palabra o frase que te dice cuándo algo pasó o no. Así pues, cuando hablamos de algo que pasó (o no), tenemos que usar el Past Simple.

ERROR

We have finally sold our house on Monday.❌

We finally sold our house on Monday.✔️ – Al final vendimos nuestra casa el lunes.

We have accepted the revised version before we finalised the draft agreement.❌

We accepted the revised version before we finalised the draft agreement.✔️ – Aceptamos la versión revisada antes de haber acabado el borrador de los agradecimientos.

I have phoned him last night.❌

I phoned him last night.✔️ – Lo llamé anoche.

⚫También usamos adverbios de tiempo indefinido con el Present Perfect:

• Already

• As yet

• Before

• Ever

• Just

• Never

• Recently

• Since

• So far

• Still

• To date

• Until now

• Yet

⚫ Normalmente usamos el Present Perfect con “the first time” cuando nos referimos a sucesos inmediatos, recientes o que aún continúan.

Was that the first time you’ve heard her sing? – ¿Era la primera vez que la oías cantar?

⚫ También usamos el Present Perfect con expresiones que contienen las siguientes construcciones:

• This is the first time…

• It is the second best…

• It is the worst…

• This is the only time…

• etc.

This is the third time that I have asked you to come and help me. – Es la tercera vez que te pido que vengas a ayudarme.

This is the worst hotel we’ve ever stayed in. – Es el peor hotel en el que nos hemos quedado nunca.

⚫ En expresiones temporales con after, until, when, as soon as, once… normalmente utilizamos el Present Perfect para referirnos a sucesos futuros:

• As soon as we have heard from them, we’ll contact you. – Tan pronto como sepamos de ellos te llamaremos.

• I won’t ring you until I’ve received the email. – No te llamaré hasta recibir el mail.

• I’ll tell you all about it when I’ve talked it over with my husband. – Te lo contaré todo cuando hable de ello con mi marido.

ERROR

• As soon as we will hear from them, we’ll contact you.❌

• I won’t ring you until I will receive the email.❌

Sin embargo, en el inglés estadounidense, en estos casos es más común usar el Present Simple. Así pues, según estés utilizando un inglés británico o uno estadounidense, puedes utilizar Present Perfect and Past Simple indistintamente:

• As soon as we hear from them we’ll contact you.✔️

• I won’t ring you until I receive the email.✔️

• I’ll tell you all about it when I talk with my husband.✔️

Hasta aquí las diferencias entre Present Perfect and Past Simple. Aunque te parezcan muchas, seguro que la mayoría de ellas ya las conocías, te sonaban o las hacías bien porque te has acostumbrado a oír esas expresiones.
