Biogeography is the study of the spatial patterns of biological diversity, and its causes, both in the present and in the past. The course will provide students the historical background for the field of biogeography, the ecological and evolutionary foundations needed to understand the distribution and abundance of species and their changes over time, and the biogeographic pattern around the globe. Students who completed this course are expected being able to 1) describe the world’s present-day biogeographic patterns, 2) explain how geographical- and evolutionary-linked characteristics influence the pattern of biodiversity globally and regionally, 3) appreciate human impacts on today’s biodiversity and how biogeography could facilitate biodiversity conservation.
