Welcome to Marcela Skovranova's Industry Based Learning Blog
Week 1
It was exciting, but also a little bit repulsive to take this big step to start a degree. The first lesson of this week grabbed my attention straight away, and I realized that I had chosen the right path. Progression in my way of thinking is what I need after finishing my studies in Beauty Therapy and Media makeup. Growing and finding out where I can take risks with my current knowledge is amazing. The way this course will twist my arms to mould me into my next stage of life is not scary for me. I am pushing myself and having an open mind about new possibilities.
Discussion in class:
What are your key skills?
My key skills are teamwork, creativity, attention to detail, organization, time management, and active listening.
What skills do you want to develop?
I would like to work on developing my communication skills, decision-making, and leadership.
Think about one of your own goals:
At this moment I would have to think about my personal goals. They can help me with the right decision. I intend to learn as much as possible to start a business or at least apply my new skills to different projects.
Smart plan
Specific: determined, patience, creative, and open-minded, I am able to apply my existing skills and improve them while studying, research a variety of resources, plan clear procedures, approach each task in a positive manner, and be productive to accomplish my smart plan.
Measurable: meeting the deadline on time, taking responsibility for each task I am planning to finish before starting another one, and wisely expanding with my current or recently gained skills.
Achievable: I have to be motivated and organized, committed, and push myself forward to achieve the finish line.
Realistic: I am able to commit and apply new skills and knowledge that I have gained in the past and focus more on the result.
Timebound: taking all lessons into consideration while learning, researching, reading new materials, and following my action plan.
Ted video reflection week 1
I have watched this video and it was interesting to hear this lady's opinion. What I experienced growing up in Slovakia, was that one learning style must fit for all. Back then, talking about thirty years ago. No one was labelled with autism or any other learning disabilities and nobody cared why a student is underperforming. Simply you needed to learn what was required from you.
I have also studied in Germany, learning the language and when I moved to Scotland, College gave me a different perspective on learning methods and I actually enjoyed it. I have learned to be more open and creative and what was amazing about it, was that every lecturer has their own learning style.
Going back to the video. From my own experience, I can say that Jim Kwik’s fast-riding technique helped me learn how to read fast in just 10 minutes. This exercise was for free, but I would not pay for an online course to teach me this. On the other hand, if someone is willing to buy a book about learning to learn, what is the difference? you still need to pay for that book.
In conclusion, even if people don’t have learning styles as mentioned in the video, I know that the motivation and willingness to open our minds through learning is endless.
Week 2
ERA model of my first reflecting practice
Me and my industry experience
Experience:
since my last college term, I have been a qualified special effect makeup artist. While I was studying, I was able to try various work experiences. Theatre, movies, photoshoots, fashion shows, bridal trials, wedding makeup, and many others. This process taught me how to talk and treat clients, staff, and crew. Stay professional and positive in any situation, but also how to have the best experience while learning as much as possible.
Reflection:
Thinking back about all those experiences, the movie one was the most challenging for me. I was the lead makeup artist. I had to work with four other makeup artists, but one of them had no willingness to participate in any meetings, or team calls, and let my team down by not putting any input on design creation. Quite soon I realised that this person was not excited about this project.
Action:
This wasn’t easy, first of all, this work was monitored by the college. All of us came from the same class and the end result was very important to all of us. At least that is what I was hoping for. The other thing was that we had to work on this project during the summer holidays and I got the feeling that the girl wasn’t happy about it, so she kept avoiding my messages.
To all fairness to my team, I have decided that the best way to solve this problem will be to let that girl go. It wasn’t easy, we were overwhelmed by the number of actors, tasks, and requirements, and the deadline was in less than two weeks. I couldn’t let this girl work with us because she created nothing, and even if she could help us on the day, it would not be fair to others. They worked very hard during the summer months and were excited about the final results. This girl let us all down, she was only after good grades and free exposure.
What I have learned:
Even if I had to push myself out of my comfort zone, to deal with a negative person. I have to say that I know that I have acted accordingly and made the right decision.
I have learned from this experience that it is very important to me to be a responsible, organised, and fair human being who treats others with the same standards. I want to work hard and be proud to show my work. Build good relationships with all people that cross my path.
CASE STUDY from my industry
A current practitioner from my industry: There are so many artists that I have been inspired by. It is hard to choose only one. I follow and take inspiration from makeup artists all over the world. Some of my favourite ones are based in Slovakia, Germany, USA but I will share my personal experience meeting UK professional makeup artist, Karla Powell.
How did their career begin: Karla shared her story with the class when I participated in one of her workshops. As a little girl, she was fascinated by her father. While he was working, she watched every single brushstroke that he made while painting faces.
When she grew up, college was one of the first steps to expanding her knowledge. Until then, she only read books and experienced different makeup techniques.
How long have they been working professionally: When she graduated in 2006 her passion for makeup became a job and she started teaching at a local college.
Karla always wanted to create her own cosmetics and that’s what she aimed for in the early stage of her career. She also had to relocate to London after she got an offer from a big high-street makeup brand, becoming their cosmetic ambassador.
How have they established themselves? (Online, events, networking)
Online exposure started when Karla began writing information about step-by-step makeup applications on her own platform. Today you can find her on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest, she also has her own website where you can buy products. Her portfolio website was amazing, that was what I discovered over five years ago, but sadly I cannot find it anymore.
Events: The fashion show in London and New York was when her dreams came true.
Networking: She collaborated with lots of businesses and corporations such as Magnum, BBC, ITV, and others.
What difficulties/ key challenges did they need to overcome:
I have found out that Karla faced challenges when she became pregnant with her son. Her passion was always to create her own business, and it took off in 2013. She only started selling nails and face charts, a set of four makeup brushes, but it was the beginning of something magical. In 2014 after her son was born, she decided that she would rather spend more time at home with her family than travel. Expanding her online cosmetic business adding more makeup products to the list.
"Fix Potion changed my life," Karla thought to herself as she looked in the mirror. "I wanted to shout so loud so everyone could experience it! This was my dream come true, my passion has become my full-time job, and it's all thanks to the magic of makeup and my hard work." (Karla Cosmetics, n.d.)
Reflection from my case study and what have I learned:
What an inspirational woman Karla Powell is to me. Following her dreams, put the hard work into seeking as much knowledge as she could since her college days. Being brave and daring to work in the beauty industry, taking on big job opportunities. Most importantly she created her own makeup products. I have learned a lot when I met Karla.
Don’t meet your hero, they say.,
I have learned a lot; I have chosen to write about this person mainly because I have done one of Karla's workshops that took place five years ago in Edinburgh.
Why I have wanted to do this workshop: I have been following and taking inspiration from this person way before I started my studies at Fife College. She had her own style and I really liked it, because it was simple but so interesting for many. It was a two-day course and, on both days, she showed us different techniques, shared her journey and knowledge, and brought a lot of makeup products with her, so we could try them all. Also, a goody bag was included with this offer, and I had the privilege to try makeup brushes designed by Karla herself.
The only issue about my experience was that there were too many students, and I felt like the price wasn’t matching the outcome.
Overall if I look back, it was a unique experience, and I have met other makeup artists with whom I have been in contact since.

Research about my industry
What is it-overview: I am a special effect makeup artist. I have started my studies at Fife College. Beauty level 5 was a taster of different aspects of beauty. My lecturer saw the passion in me and recommended that I move a level up to Beauty therapy massage. After completing two years of beauty courses, I finally moved to Level 6 makeup artistry. This was what I always wanted to learn, but life got in the way. Finally, in 2019 the dream became reality and I loved it from the start until the pandemic in 2020 overwhelmed everyone. Thanks to our lecturer's precision learning plan, we managed to complete the first year of the makeup course from home. HNC fashion makeup was a break from makeup artistry and we all were glad that we could continue our studies from the comfort of our homes and Team meetings became the new norm. My final HND makeup artistry was my two years of mainly special effects, theatre, movies, and catwalk makeup application.
In my study, I have covered a wide variety of different aspects. In beauty, we can work with skin care products and purchase home beauty devices that will keep our skin young, we can also visit salons or spas.
In makeup artistry, there are lots of opportunities when it comes to fashion, TV, or Theatre job aspects.
Makeup products and big brands on every high street are sometimes too much and people can be overwhelmed with what to buy.
Online shops and influencers' recommendations aren’t the same as real experience when it comes to makeup products.
Influencing factors:
Economical: I have found that the economics of the beauty industry in the UK is £24,5 bn. Hair services on their own contribute £5,1bn to UK economics.
“It’s grown 20% year on year which is about a billion a year so it's definitely moving in the right direction.” In-text citation: (professionalbeauty.co.uk, n.d.)
Competition:
“The beauty industry is one of the, most competitive industries in the world.
It faces monopolistic competition, where a large number of companies compete for the same market size. The industry is also impacted by environmental factors such as Covid-19 and sustainability. To succeed in this industry, brands need to be innovative, compelling, and flexible.” In-text citation: (MEYER, 2021)
And not to forget that everyone is competing to sell their products at the lowest possible price.
Changes in direction: vegan, natural ingredients, one-use plastic, pandemic, rising prices, and other factors are what every cosmetic brand and service has to consider moving forward. Companies have to adapt to always-changing trends, consumer preferences changes in testing on animals, and the current world situation. But most important is a change in the market, new brands are created really fast which makes the market compete even harder. Manufacturing and marketing.
Trends: Growth of the sector
The fastest-growing beauty brand is Wild Cosmetics which offers natural deodorant, body wash, and soap. Established in 2019. They offer natural ingredients and promise 100% plastic-free, compostable refills. In the beginning, they sold the products online, via subscription or one of the purchases. Today the range of products can be bought not just online but across over 4000 UK shops. The refill case is unique and sustainable, helping our planet with the plastic crisis.
Products and Services:
Beauty salons are offering better services, increasing in modern boutiques and lounges.
Fake eyelashes are a new must and are popular among young and mature people. These days you can buy them online, in the shop, or get them from a vending machine.
An online quiz that would recommend specific beauty products is a new way that brands are offering their services.
Another way of services how to try out a product is a virtual reality or AI experience.

Week 3
1, Videos about the mindsets
The mindset posts always pop up here and there while I am browsing the internet, but having time to watch the lesson videos about mindsets was good for me. During the lockdown, I came across the book about Rich dad poor dad and I thought it was mind-blowing. I definitely will read this book again with a deeper understanding of our mindsets.
In the last seven days, have you displayed a fixed mindset? I always like to push myself to complete new challenges and the Pecha Kucha video presentation was one of them. At first, I questioned myself because I had never done a presentation like this.
In the last seven days, when have you displayed a growth mindset? Creating and working on the video, I have challenged myself to learn new skills. I push myself to have interesting content in my presentation.
Which mindset worked out and why? I have been motivated by learning something new. Why, because I knew that in class, I could be more experimental with my performance while delivering this presentation.
When would you like to adopt a growth mindset more often? This and last week's portfolio presentation were definitely what I have never done before. The results for me were pleasant and not scary at all. I am definitely ready to face similar challenges and see what I can learn by completing them.
2, Mindset/ Know yourself
What is your personal metaphor for life?
It would be the meaning of my name Marcela “Young Warrior” because I always feel young (smile) and when I have to “fight” with myself to learn something new, at the end of the day I feel like I have conquered the world, because I have listened to my instincts and I am closer to achieving my goals.
Recently I have seen this and it made me think and understand the creative side of myself.
Creativity isn’t talent, creativity is a type of mindset.
Would you agree with this metaphor?
What words do you use, if any, to express that metaphor in daily life? I don’t, really. On the other hand, I definitely will start. I would say, just go on with it, because everything I do, small or big, makes me more confident. That’s how Warrior should look at it.
How does it help you make sense of your life? Even if I am scared of new challenges, I don’t give up without trying first.
In what ways, if any, does this metaphor offer a constructive way of approaching your life? Because I don’t allow myself to have a fixed mindset.
3, Reflect
What have you learned about today's lesson? The time is now, to have time to sit down and reflect on my new journey, to learn and experience, to push myself, and grow my confidence.
What have you learned about this exercise? This was definitely something that I had never thought about before and writing about it made me think about my mindset in a fresher, healthier, and more exciting way.
How do you feel? I ordered Carol Dwek's book while watching the very first video in our today's lesson. So, I feel excited about reading it during our autumn break.
Fixed Mindset
I may fail
They are not going to hire me
Afraid to learn new skills because it looks too difficult
I will give up
Growth Mindset
I am going to learn from my mistakes, so next time I know what to do
I will do my best at the interview and learn from this experience
I will try anyway and I will enjoy it
I will motivate myself, working on small tasks every day, bringing me closer to the finish line
Week 4
Understanding My Industry
1, Analyse job roles within the sector in relation to your own skill sets, knowledge, and behaviours.
Bridal Make-up Artist
The knowledge that a bridal make-up artist has to have is to be able to adapt the style of application to a wedding theme and also have an understanding of the trendy and traditional preferences.
The most important skill has to be within the bridal techniques and to be able to create long-lasting make-up applications that would last all night.
As a make-up artist, it is crucial to have the best behaviour towards new or existing clients, to have empathy, and patience and to work under pressure during wedding make-up applications.
Future opportunities: Freelance Make-up Artist and Business owner
Knowledge includes skin types, products, the industry, brand understanding, and most importantly knowing about the variety of make-up styles such as special effects, bridal, evening, editorial, and other styles. As a business owner, it is also crucial to know about regulations and market trends.
Skills, such as time management, different application techniques, and being more creative with a variety of clients and their requests. As an owner leadership and management skills are a must, but so are entrepreneurial skills.
Interpersonal skills could be also classified as great behaviour toward the clients, attention to detail, and professionalism.
Future opportunities: Bloggers and Beauty Influencers
Digital marketing knowledge is very important but also a great understanding of algorithms on social media.
Skills such as own branding, social media management, and knowing how to create content that can be shared with millions worldwide.
Behaviours on social media are important and must be ethical, as well as engagement with followers must be consistent. Excellent decision-making, strategic planning, and financial management are good practices for business owners.
Future opportunities: Make-up Artists working in retail
Knowledge about different skin types, if clients have questions about products and how they can use them, but also understanding the brand that the company is selling.
Customer service skills are very important, being good in make-up applications for all clientele.
Behaviours such as the ability to speak and handle clients when they are being unreasonable, selling products, and good communication when making a sale.
Future opportunities: Working as an editor in a fashion magazine
Knowledge of fashion trends and understanding how photographs can grab a reader’s attention.
Skills to consider while working in this kind of job are vogue trends, experiences in high-fashion make-up techniques, skills in catwalks, and collaboration with fashion designers and photographers.
Behaviour awareness while working in a team, being adaptable to change a style if needed, and being creative.
Film and theatrical make-up artist
Knowledge, knowing how to mark down the script, creativity within character design products, and health and safety understanding.
Skills, continuity, maintenance cuts, attention to detail, time management, and special effects techniques.
Behaviours, to have while working in this time-consuming job, are patience, people skills, creativity, and professionalism.
2, Perform a role as a freelance contractor
Stanley’s Gig
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=4ZGSKF5zcX8&feature=youtu.be
Last year, I had the privilege to work on this proof-of-concept movie trailer. I have landed a role as a lead make-up artist and within the college, we have collaborated this experience with our Film production study.
It wasn't easy and the responsibility for me was extreme. Yuengling college work and organising what was needed for the movie before the deadlines. This wasn’t an overnight job, it actually took 5 months of planning that spread over the summer holidays, which was extra difficult having my classmates as part of my team.
My responsibilities: what happened in pre-production, as a make-up designer I received
script from the Producer and the Production manager.
In the pre-production meeting, we discussed the budget, ideas for producer visual design plans for make-up/Hair, and any changes and continuities during the filming. At this point of the meeting, we spoke about the number of team representatives. This meeting included people from all departments, such as costume designers, cast and crew, directors, and others.
The script: I was excited but at the same time terrified as I read the first script that I was going to work on. This couldn’t be more confusing to me as the script was written in a very brief form and lots of it was happening. The point was that the proof of concept is usually a short video, showcasing the theme of the full scale of the movie. That way we can understand the story from the beginning to the end, in a short space of time, in my case just over 5 minutes of a trailer.
After reading the script three times, I found it very funny and felt confident to explain it scene by scene to my hair and makeup team.
The fun part of this job was to design and create appropriate hair and make-up plans for each character, following the requirements of the script.
More responsibilities came with creating an accountable team to work on make-up/hair. I had to make good continuity notes, take pictures, keep references, and work out a schedule for the whole make-up/hair team.
As a Make-up designer, I had to appoint people and give them responsibilities they had to follow before and during the filming. Before we started shooting, I checked the locations of filming, and dedicated areas for the team to work and to make sure that the PPE, health, and safety were in place and followed.
All meetings with the Make-up/Hair team were organised by me after each time I spoke with the producers.
In production, I had to make sure that everyone was following the brief on time and that everything was going according to the designer's plan. I was checking the make-up application and finished hairstyle looks before the actor entered the film set. Supervising the make-up process and continuity was one of the main responsibilities to keep consistency throughout the filming. Sometimes it could be spread over a longer period of time, even as long as 6 months or more. In our case, we were filming only for two full days, but it was good practice to have.
All responsibilities that a make-up designer has to manage include filling in scene sheets, and call sheets, processing invoices and timings of make-up/hair for everyone, and working on the budget for make-up applications and hairstyles.
Ordering, hiring, maintaining, and in post-production removing and returning wigs or any accessories which were used during the filming.
3, Develop, manage, and maintain professional relationships
As a make-up designer, I was able to create a great working environment for everyone who was part of my team, but I also managed and spoke properly in any difficult or stressful situations.
Collaboration on this project was very important for me, as this was my first job in the film industry, I wanted to make a good first impression and continued doing so over the whole time.
The professional relationship with the producer, my team, and the crew was easy to create because I always take responsibility for my actions and everyone did the same before, during, and after filming.
4, Critically reflect on your own learning
As I have mentioned before I am a responsible person and I want others to behave in the same way. When it came to working on a new exciting project, I wanted to create a team of make-up artists that have the same standards as I have. Unfortunately, one of my classmates wasn’t willing to collaborate during the summer holidays, so I had to make a decision to let her go. It wasn’t easy but now when I look back, I know that my decision was correct.
5, Prepare action plans to support ongoing development as a creative practitioner
Retain good relationships with the producers and the crew, to have open possibilities to work on new interesting projects and if this proof on concept trailer is successful and gets funding it is a good opportunity to be a make-up designer on a real full-length movie. I have already put an action plan in place for new opportunities in this incredible film industry. One of the actors was helping me with my graded project and he has done it as a favour. He has a few projects in mind where I can be useful to him as a make-up artist. I would work hard to expand on my current skills and by doing workshops online or in person I would like to gain new skills that I can practise on real models. This would help me to work on my portfolio and to take inspiration. I am positive because there is so much I can explore, social media, workshops, new opportunities, networking with professionals, and many more.
Workshop experiences
Bridge 2 Business
Workshop number 1 Intro to Enterprise, Social Media and Analytics
In the past, I have attended a few business-related workshops but they were on a bigger scale. What I liked about them was that they had motivational speakers there which I found really interesting listening to and at the same time learning from their experiences.
I found our workshop on Monday more persistent with a smaller group of people. We learned about each other's opinions and also, I have learned where the weak and strong sides of my classmates are.
For my benefit, I have learned that if I have any questions, I can book a meeting with Bridge 2 Business and they will point me in the right direction. During the workshop, the most interesting thing for me as a make-up artist was to learn about social media entrepreneur presents. Why the content of their shared post is designed specifically to attract the chosen audience/future customers. It made me think about the individual design of the social media that they are using and see it from a business point of view. I ask myself questions such as: What do I like about their social media, what would I like them to change, what can they improve on, who are their customers and audience, what products are they promoting and selling, what ways are they using to draw in more followers.
I have also expanded my knowledge of the Meta business that I am using at work, and I have found the explanation and the information very useful.
Overall, the engagement with the class was set in a nice relaxed tone and we all enjoyed finding out more about new tricks that we can use in our university project and everyday lives going forward.
Workshop number 2 Introduction to Branding and Confidence Building
Another amazing workshop and this was exactly what we needed. I and everyone else in the class are working on branding and started to create a logo for our personal, but also group projects. I now have a better understanding of the psychology of colours and brand marks or what terms to use for my targeted audience. I never thought of symbols and how important they are when it comes to logos and branding. I have learned what tools I can use to create logos. I found it interesting when Liam talked about growing our skills, facing challenges, where the lack of confidence comes from, and also why it is important to push ourselves out of our comfort zone.
Confidence is something that I am working on every day. I have pushed myself through tons of challenges. First was speaking a foreign language, now I can speak four different languages. Moving away from where I grew up, getting a job, and studying in a new country. I joined Fife College to get certification for beauty therapy and later went through not one interview at this institute and got a job. Finally, being a proud student and studying for a degree. This didn’t happen overnight, I am always taking little steps and enjoying the learning journey. I have never been in one room with so many creative people and the bonus is that all those people are thinking almost the same way as I do, or at least looking at the new ideas in the same way.
Workshop number 3 Building Connections and Wellbeing
Wellbeing: for me is about good mental health.
Psychological wellbeing is a complex concept but I would identify it as a feeling good in a general sense. Be confident with who I am and have a good relationship with myself. Liam explained that it is important to be in tune with the motivations and goals we all have, small or big. Emotional balance is something that I need to work on facing everyday challenges. Now at Uni, no day is the same, we are all creative with different lifestyles, sharing opinions, and being honest with each other. What we need to learn is to be mindful about the well-being of others as we would do it to ourselves.
Building Connections: this is super important for all of us in class. Learning about the business side of how to professionally present ourselves on social media or even when we are looking for a job, or just looking for more work experience is crucial. Linked In is a new platform that I am exploring at the moment. Liam has pointed out Do and Don’ts that I am going to explore to have a good, professional profile. At the moment I am not looking for a job, but it is great to build up connections with professionals and companies.

TAKE A MOMENT NOW Reflect
What have you learned so far?
Overall, I have learned how to reflect on everything I am doing. I have also learned how positive and creative mindsets are working in my favour to progress effectively in everything I am doing.
The critical analysis helped me with my personal growth and career choices.
Since this course started, I have become more open-minded about taking risks with new ideas and exploring new possibilities, especially with the Swaveart project but also, I am working on my project which is a beauty and make-up-related business.
Create Action Plan:
Objective: my goal is to gain as much knowledge about how to create and run a business. Experiencing my existing skills as a beauty therapist and make-up artist, adding new skills to my portfolio.
Timeline: completing every given deadline for all classes. End of April 2024
Branding and marketing, networking: I have designed my logo and I have also started with leaflets designed for beauty at the moment. As I am paying my full attention to Swaveart at the moment and mostly networking for group projects, I will start beauty treatments on people I know, that way word of mouth will be my networking at the moment for beauty.
Services and pricing: more research is needed for pricing, but I will learn this faster through my client feedback and preferences of applications and treatments.
Clients and their feedback: starting with gel nail application and moving on to different treatments, eventually completing my experiment with bridal make-up.
Researching freelancing possibilities: this is something that has interested me for a long time now. More research is needed to have a better understanding.
Next stages:
Because I am already working in my industry, I am not looking for a job, I only want to expand my skills and experiment with make-up and beauty sites as this is my passion.
Swaveart is getting popular and we are working hard to take it to the next level, again completely pushing myself to learn completely new skills.

Do you have a logo/brand identity?
Yes, I have created a logo but I am still waiting for the logo designer to give me her feedback and maybe see what she can come back with, that way I will be satisfied with my final choice.
Have you been networking?
On Linked In: I have created an account for myself but didn’t know where to start as I am not looking for a job in my industry. I am already working in my industry.
Please feel free to follow me: Marcela Skovranova
Instagram: I have multiple accounts already and just now I feel like I would confuse people about what I am doing, what project I am working on. I have only posted a few make-up looks on social media in my past studies. I have always managed to find a model for my assessments. I know this is different and if I want to promote the beauty business, I would have to put 100% of my energy into it.
At the moment, we have spent money that we would like to get back from Swaveart and that is where my energy on social media will go at the moment.
Please feel free to follow us: @ SwaveArt.co.uk @woodwhisper_uk
Facebook: I am not going to use this social media for beauty or personal use.
For Swaveart we would have to use this site to reach a bigger audience.
TikTok: is a platform that we want to explore in the future.
Are you regularly posting on LinkedIn ?
At the moment not sure what to share as I am not looking for a job, and I keep my life private but I would like to post about Swaveart
Have you /are you posting on other sites -or researched the sites suitable for your area of expertise?
Yes and No
We have created websites for Swaveart and Woodwhisper that way we can link them to Instagram.
I have tried setting up a Facebook account for Swaveart but it was complicated, took my whole day and after two days they cancelled it.
I couldn’t spend more time on it at that point but I would try again.
Reflect on what you have done and where you are now:
Researching my industry: written evidence, I know I have included the history but this is part of who I am. I needed to include the beginning of how people started it and 1900 fascinates me even more because it was the end of old fashion and the beginning of new freedom of expression.
What have I learned? There are so many brands and treatments that you can choose from and it was refreshing to just take a moment and research what is important in my industry. The money that is brought by it and the unstoppable new trends are fascinating.
Most of all now I know how to research brands that I would like to work with. How and why are they bringing money to the UK and US economy. Animal testing is not ethical and should be controlled better in other countries. Through this research, I have been inspired by ladies who started their brands and learned that dedication and pure passion are important when it comes to following your vision. As a creative individual, I was very interested in reading about 3D-printed parts of clothing for the fashion industry.
Why have I included fashion? Coming from a fashion background I am always going to be interested in new ways of technology integration into this industry. Working on my group project raised my interest to the max and 3D printing is something that I am already familiar with, having two 3D printers at home.
Branding and social media: not easy. I have learned that time is what we don’t have at the moment to create, work, and study and I feel I don’t have the confidence and time to constantly post on social media. As for Swaveart, it takes a long time to design, cut, paint, and glue each piece together, there is no time to post, just because we are getting ready for the 1st of February event and it's only the two of us working, and there using every spare minute to present our projects.
Once we are more organised and up in running, I need to find a routine of how to do all this including branding.
Creating content: it is easy if you have good pictures. I am obsessed with details and pictures have to look nice to draw in follower’s attention. They don’t need to be professional pictures, they just need to look smart.
Planning: I have learned that I have great organisation skills but working, studying, and working on multiple projects leaves me time for nothing else. This is why I have a better understanding of the importance of planning to have the best-planned day and how not to waste time on unimportant tasks.
Workshops: B2B is an amazing way to get the most information in one section. I am learning new things every time Liam is speaking to us. He is looking at it from our business point of view and he knows what is important information for the whole group. The tasks he gives us are great ways to think about good and bad situations, experiences, and real-life scenarios.
I have learned about myself: that I have found a new passion in each project, research, and experience even good and bad ones. I would like to do it all and experience all aspects of business creation.
We are excited about the all-staff event and cannot wait for clients' feedback which will guide us in the right direction.
Achievements and any feedback received:
Comments from group work projects:
We have received likes and lovely private messages about the group project we are working on. Everyone we talk to is amazed by our idea and cannot wait to support us.
The individual project that I have started is going to be interesting because I am planning to do different kinds of beauty treatments and make-up. After working with my first client, I am confident in what I have planned to do.
Include your own performance and management skills:
Working in the group from the start was exciting but we had to face a difficult situation. Phil left our group and Billy was not helping. Myself and Jakub, we have done everything together supporting each other and working long hours especially now for upcoming events.
We help each other where we can and there are no hard feelings about the other 2 group members as we both understand that the course isn’t easy and everyone also has other commitments.
Identify areas you can improve: for my project, it is branding and pricing that I need to improve on. For the group project, it would be learning all the programs and operating machines we are using, but at the moment I am adapting and doing my best to create bespoke items to showcase our individuality.
What will you do next: we are at the stage to take the group project to the next level which is to get advice to start a company. Few meetings are planned for this week. Getting ready for the upcoming all-staff event and exhibition will be the next event.
Individual project: get as much experience working with clients doing different treatments. I am always thinking about COVID-19 and what would I do if this situation came back. Opening a beauty salon is not what I would ever do just because working from home and having a beauty room would be more satisfactory for me. That way I can choose my hours and work from the comfort of my home. I am not saying this because I am lazy, I am thinking about this because it would save me money renting premises somewhere else.
What's working or not and why?
Working: I am excited to work on my existing skills and learn more about craftsmanship and businesses.
Not working: not paying full attention to all projects because I also work three days per week and three days per week I am at Uni
Why: I feel like I am pushing myself more into doing makeup than starting a Swaveart company. And this is mind-blowing for me.
Smart plan
Specific: determined, patient, creative, and open-minded, I can apply my existing skills and improve them while completing this project, research a variety of resources, plan clear procedures, positively approach each task, and be productive to accomplish my smart plan.
Measurable: meeting the deadline on time, taking responsibility for each task I am planning to finish before starting another one, following my diary, and wisely experimenting with my current or recently gained skills.
Achievable: to realise these projects I have to be motivated and organised, committed to practising my skills, and pushing myself forward to achieve the finish line.
Realistic: I can commit and apply new skills, and techniques that I have gained in the past and current time and focus more on the result.
Timebound: finding a suitable model, researching before trying something new, selecting appropriate resources, and following my action plan.
My strengths are: I am dedicated and always act professionally while working with people or when I am around people, I am a caring person and I put other people’s needs before mine, I take any opportunity seriously, I am never shy to learn new skills, I have a positive attitude toward people or any new experiences, I am a fast learner and I take responsibility for my action.
My weaknesses are not having enough experience in business, branding or pricing

As part of my Personal Development
Identifying my current SWOT
Strengths: my positivity is my strength; with this and other projects, I was eager to experience and plan something that I had never done before. I am not afraid to learn new skills when it comes to beauty or makeup. I am confident to work on my own or as a part of a team.
Weaknesses: not enough experience in my industry, while studying I had a chance to work on an amazing project. Now having a job and still studying time management is crucial when it comes to expanding my knowledge in the beauty industry.
Opportunities: in the beauty industry, there are lots of opportunities for new training courses that I have applied for. These are evening classes that are perfect for me in my busy schedule. Our department at work offers new treatments and I am happy to go through the required training. Laser hair removal is one of them.
Threats: someone with more knowledge and experience in my industry could be a potential threat if I would apply for a different job role in my sector.
Setting my goals
What I need to consider while setting my goals and action plan:
My implementation of visions and strategic planning of this course should result in achievable goals. Following my own set of step-by-step instructions to fulfil this vision, help me to develop good strategies from the beginning throughout the whole year.
What do I need to do, when, and why to set goals and priorities for development such as measures, my activities, and my intentions to make it accomplishable for my set of skills and knowledge.
At my work, I am willing to participate in beauty-related trainings that are offered to students and staff.
Creating an Action Plan
Specific: determined, patience, creative, and open-minded, I can apply my existing skills and improve them while completing all projects and tasks, research a variety of resources, plan clear procedures in a timely fashion, positively approach each task, and be productive to accomplish my smart plan.
Measurable: meeting all deadlines on time, taking responsibility for each task I am planning to finish before starting another one, following my diary, and wisely using my current or recently gained skills.
Achievable: to work and manage my time effectively, I have to be motivated and well organised, committed to taking my skills in the right direction, and pushing myself forward to achieve the finish line.
Realistic: I can commit and apply new skills, and techniques that I have gained in the past years while studying or working and I can now easily focus more on the result.
Timebound: finding suitable training, researching what is new in the beauty/make-up and hair industry, selecting an appropriate environment for my training, and following my action plan.
My weakness is: not having enough experience within my industry while working and studying. I feel like I am missing out on the flexibility that beauty/make-up artists have.
Reflection on my research:
I have included history to have a better understanding of where cosmetic products came from, how people used them at the beginning, and why makeup is what it is today. Another reason is that I have talked about the beginning, middle, and present days.
We live in the UK and I wanted to include the USA market in this research, especially my favourite cosmetics.
Through this research, I had to select the most interesting findings. There is so much in the beauty and make-up industry that it is difficult to stay focused and write just about one brand.
I have learned about the economy and how each sector is growing, who brings the most money, and why they are popular.
Why have I included fashion in my industry research? Coming from a fashion background I am always going to be interested in new ways of technology integration into this industry. Working on my group project raised my interest to the max and 3D printing is something that I am already familiar with, having two 3D printers at home.
Now I have understood what happened through the centuries. What factors influenced the economy and shaped the industry or society globally as we know it today.
How this research going to help me:
I have a better understanding of the brands cosmetic products, and treatments that are constantly bringing money to the economy.
As I already work in this industry and have never done deeper research about it while studying, I can now say that it helped me to get better knowledge about where it all started and why now cosmetics are in high demand.
It was very interesting to finally take time and read about 3D printing which I going to explore more in the future.
Celebrity endorsement and celebrity branding, I haven’t included this in my research but it was interesting to read about it. branding on social media platforms is something that I need to do also at work, we use Facebook for our advertising. In the future, I would like to promote my own business Davinci Enterprise Ltd on Tic Tok to get more sales.
Overall, this research helped me to engage and think about informed decisions. Now I can easily identify new opportunities when it comes to growth in my industry. The market is going to be constantly evolving and this was the best way to stay informed and focused.
