Design for Manufacture

A directory for work explored in material and manufacture method testing - 2020-2023

Injection moulding concept

A second year project exploring design for manufacture focussing on injection moulding  - 2020

The above concept was made to demonstrate an understanding of design for manufacture, and in particular design for injection moulding. This project involved choosing a plastic product and redesigning the casing, taking into consideration all the allowances that needed to be made in order for it to be injection moulded and assembled within a reasonable budget and as efficiently in terms of cost and material use as possible.

I chose a usb as my initial object and redesigned the casing to house a pen as well in order to get the opportunity to work on a more

complex project and more varied casing requirements (bosses, ribbing etc.) which I would not have been able to explore in a smaller case design.

Lost wax casting (Silver, gold, bronze)

Jewellery created while exploring lost wax casting as a longtime hobby

- 2020-2023

Following a short course taken outside of uni in the summer of 2020 I delved into exploring lost wax casting for jewellery. I took the course in order to explore the fabrication technique of lost wax casting for the purpose of casting with silver and brass. Outside of this I have experience with lost wax casting from MSLA caste-able resin prints, casting glass and mould making for various materials.

Open source manufacture

The 'Bloom lamp' was the first open source project explored as a novel manufacture method for greater accessibility and an attempt to limit waste created in the manufacture of a medical support device.

Mycelium material testing

Through a furniture project commissioned by KFive Studio I have explored mould making for Mycelium, through this I have worked with 3D printed 4 part moulds, and CNC blue foam moulds with wax slip as a sealant. alongside this I have explored the use of mycelium as a material, exploring over 20 substrates and various methods for the growing and drying of mycelium.

Glass casting

Multiple methods including casting from FDM 3D prints, lost wax casting, glass slumping, blowing, grinding and sand casting - 2020

Ceramic 3D printing

Ceramic 3D printing material testing - 2020

This same method was used in the Compot composting system project (press button bolow to navigate to that project)
