There are many different ways to adapt board books and picture books to accommodate children who are reluctant readers, have complex communication needs, have visual or motor impairments, and/or have other unique instructional needs. Some examples include adding “page fluffers” to make pages easier to flip, providing tactile enhancement to pictures, adding symbols or simplified language to the text, and more.
Making physical adaptations to books that integrate multisensory elements into books can increase children’s engagement, participation, and imaginative experience in shared book reading.
