Inclusion Weyburn is a fairly new organization. It started in 2018 when it became apparent that our community was lacking in opportunities for our youth who had intellectual disabilities. A search for summer programs for these children revealed this shortfall. Numerous camps and activities were available for neurotypical kids but no groups were able to offer the support necessary for our children to participate. This had to change, but how? Luckily, we learned about Inclusion Saskatchewan, an organization that has proven to to be a great fit for us. In April 2018, we became a branch of Inclusion Saskatchewan and Inclusion Weyburn was born! That summer we enjoyed our first inclusive summer camp which was created through a partnership with the Weyburn Leisure Centre’s, “Fun in the Sun” for children aged 6-12.
By the summer of 2019, we were able to start a partnership with the Family Place and four of our 3-5 year olds attended that program. Things were moving along so well! Goals made for the summer of 2020 included sending more preschoolers to Sunny Scholars, reaching more children to attend the “Inclusive Fun in the Sun” camp and implementing a camp to meet the needs of our teens. Then Covid-19 hit. Schools closed, and it was necessary to redirect plans to help individuals and families cope with the new challenges that they faced. The Respite Care Program was created. Overwhelming positive feedback from participating families indicated the need to continue the program, and it now runs year round for families not only in Weyburn, but in various smaller places in our area.
While the inclusive summer camps and respite care are certainly the biggest programs we provide, smaller projects such as the Family/Buddy Swims and Play Times at the Sparks Playground run monthly. We look forward to reintroducing dances, barbeques and other social events as well once the pandemic ends. As the needs of our individuals and families change, we are challenged to react and adapt our agenda to accommodate them. We are thankful for donations and grants that make this all possible. We appreciate our community for caring to know more about INWEY and giving us such great support. We are inspired by our individuals and families who make it all so worthwhile.
