WCSD Prepares for Winter Weather, Reminds
Families and Community About Safety Protocols
The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is preparing for the upcoming winter season and reminding the community about inclement weather procedures designed to keep students and staff members safe during the winter months.
The district may delay the start of school by two hours or may close schools entirely when weather and road conditions are hazardous, and there are a variety of ways in which the district will notify families and the community about any changes in the school schedule. These include the Connect Ed system, local media, posting on the district’s website (www.washoeschools.net), and posting on social media (Facebook, X, Threads, and Instagram).
Connect Ed provides direct communication from the school district to its families and staff members.
“The first thing families need to do is make sure their contact information is updated in our Connect Ed system,” said Adam Searcy, Chief Operating Officer for WCSD. “We work hard to communicate with our families, and the most direct method is to contact them through Connect Ed, which will reach out to them with phone calls, emails, and text messages—whatever they prefer.”
Families should contact their child’s school to provide the most updated cell phone numbers and email addresses to ensure they receive messages in a timely manner.
District staff members begin monitoring and measuring road conditions and temperatures between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. and consult with the National Weather Service and other partners before making decisions about delays and closures. Incline Village schools are impacted more frequently throughout the winter due to heavier snow and lower temperatures, while Gerlach K-12 School may be impacted differently due to its location. These schools may operate under delays and cancelations that do not affect other schools. Any other plans to accommodate hazardous conditions would affect all remaining schools in the district.
“It’s important that our families know what to expect,” said Scott Lee, Director of Transportation for WCSD. “We will see much slower traffic, and our students may be walking in the street because the sidewalks are covered in snow. We ask drivers to slow down, pay attention, and be careful, and we ask that our students dress in warm, bright clothes so they can be seen more easily as they walk or wait for our buses to arrive.”
Winter bus stops are used in inclement weather. These stops are located near the usual bus stops, but in areas that are safer when road conditions are more challenging. A complete list of winter bus stops is available here.

School of Choice
School of Choice is a system where Washoe County School District (WCSD) families can choose which school they want their children to attend. This process was formerly known as the variance process. WCSD has streamlined this process for our families, making it more accessible. The District will offer two windows, one in the fall and one in the spring, when families can apply to a school other than their student's zoned school. We believe students will be the most successful in the school where they feel connected and seen and with an academic program that best suits their needs. Online Registration must be completed in order to be considered for a School of Choice placement. Please see below for a list of frequently asked questions.
