The movie In Time, there are many network security issues that pose a threat to vulnerable populations of people in the “ghetto”. There is a scene in the beginning of the movie where a wealthy man, named Henry Hamilton with a lot of time. He walks into a dodgy bar in a poor neighborhood run by the Minute Men gangsters. The leader of the gang, named Fortis approaches Henry and tries to steal his time. This relates to how cyber criminal organizations collaborate to conspire against individuals who can’t protect themselves. Cybercriminals often rent a suite of software that controls a collection of infected machines. Other criminals who rent this software can run their own attacks for different purposes such as spam delivery or password fishing.
In the film, there is no way for transactions to be authenticated as illegitimate. After Henry Hamilton decides to give all of his remaining time to Will Salas for protecting him against the gang, the Time Keepers who are supposed to keep track of stolen time, accuse Will of stealing from Henry. Although the Time Keepers take back the time from Will, they do so unethically since Henry is dead and they have no proof that a crime took place. This is an example of Act Utilitarianism because the Time Keepers ignore Henry's innocence and pursue him as a criminal because he is breaking their rigid constructs of social and economic mobility.
Towards the end of the film, Henry and a woman he meets named Sylvia decide that they are going to rob the time banks that her father owns and start giving the time away for free. This is a form of hacktivism where Henry and Sylvia justify their actions with act utilitarianism. This another kind of activism that justifies stealing from the wealthy in order to help poor people.
