Our anchor text for this module is Indian No More. Information about the book and its rating on Common Sense Media is available here. You can also use Common Sense Media to read reviews from the perspectives of other students your child's age and consider your family's values concerning the more difficult topics in this book. We will have classroom discussions about the U.S. government's treatment of Indigenous peoples, respectful language, racism, media representation, and adults who smoke, drink, and act out while under the influence; however, I recognize that every family has different values and you will want to discuss with your child how your family specifically views these topics. You may also discuss with your child that they will hear different viewpoints in the classrom and are expected to disagree but be respectful.
Please consider reading our anchor text, Indian No More, ahead of or along with your child in order to be informed and reflective when your child has questions or wants to discuss the book with you. It is also good to have a copy of the book at home so that your child can use it for reflective journals, reference it for projects, or staying caught up on days he or she is not able to be present at school. Indian No More can be purchased on Amazon here. Local libraries may also have available copies, and students will have access to digital copies and audio versions. Other texts we will read during this module include but are not limited to the texts below. Suggested texts for independent reading can be found here.
